    Pleasant Surprise

After visiting a couple of times, I would like to give credit to this yummy diner/bistro. Decor is the only thing diner-like because the food is really good. My friends and I had interesting salads as starters and all of our entrees were very well prepared like the roast chicken and grilled shrimp dishes. Big desserts can feed 3 or more. The burger wasn't great but the fries are. Service is a little haphazard but the wait-staff is very nice and friendly. Looks are deceiving as this one undecorated restaurant room serves some very delicious dishes.

A diner with 4 star food and candles

Everything here is amazing. The mashed potatoes are some of the best in the city. The steak is great. The fish and the scallops are shockingly fantastic. The beet salad and the warm mushroom salad are healthy and delicious. And even the hummus is good. They don't do anything wrong.

    Great food, too noisy

The stuffed calamari appetizer was about the best I've ever tasted. I wish it were also offered as a main course. The calamari usually found in restaurants consists of overcooked, rubberized unidentifiable stuff in a red sauce. I decided to take a chance at Market Cafe and was pleasantly surprised. The calamari was tender and tasty in a slightly spicy sauce made with a delicious mix of herbs and spices. My only complaint is that the restaurant is too noisy -- does anyone really enjoy the extremely loud "music" that's forces customers to scream in order to hear each other? It's not my idea of an enjoyable dinner. The calamari was great but we couldn't wait to get out to the "quiet" street.

    Grilled Pizza?

Chosen because of a friend’s recommendation when looking for a restaurant close to the 37 Arts Theater. There were 5 of us on June 21st. A pizza was ordered as an appetizer. When it arrived it looked fine so everyone had at least a bite. No one wanted more than a bite or two. It tasted burnt. Not just a crispy taste, but burnt. When we told the waitress, she took it away, but said we should know that they grilled their pizzas and that if we didn’t like this one we shouldn’t order one in the future. She didn’t seem to consider that perhaps this one was burnt. Maybe some people like it to taste that way, but I’d be surprised. Anyone who liked the one we had would have to like burnt toast too. The rest of the meal was fine, but service though polite was decidedly cool after that.

    I LOVE this place!

I could happily eat everything on the menu...and probably have. The burger, steak frites, salmon tartar, hummus, potato pizza...whatever. And the atmosphere is cool, laid back, casual bistro-style with great tunes. Go! Just leave me a seat...

    A Surprise Winner!

Never been to this neighborhood before but needed a place for dinner close to the 37 Arts Theatre. Read the reviews here and took a chance; what a pleasant surprise! No atmosphere (looks more like a second-rate coffee shop) but the kitchen knows what it's doing. A perfectly-cooked chicken breast with creamy mashed potatoes was a winner, as was the steak frites with some of the best french fries ever. Service was quick and efficient and the price was a bargain: Dinner for two for under $50! Move this place 10 blocks north and I'll become a regular!

A great place in an unexpected location

It's a rare gem on 9th Avenue: good food, decent prices, good service. The atmosphere can be noisy, but not overly so. The fish dishes are excellent, as are the burgers. Cakes are huge if you're in a dessert kind of mood.
