    Cute but not impressed

The atmosphere at Maria Pia is very nice. Brick walls, candle light. The food is not expensive by any means but for the price I expected more. The portion sizes were average but the taste was lacking. Everything was bland. Things were cooked properly, aldente, etc. but the flavor just wasn't there. The pasta was swimming in sauce - too much for my liking. The service was strange - before I even swallowed the last fork-full of food on my plate, the busboy was taking it away. We even had a busboy accidentally take our bread plates, with the bread still on them, because he wasn't paying attention and just wanted to pick up the plates. They might want to think about buying more dishes if there is such a lack of them that they must take them back even before someone is finished. I felt hurried.

I went here a few times with an ex boyfriend of mine last summer. The 1st time we were very impressed with the total package of the restaurant. The next couple of times were just ok. But overall, the atmosphere, (when not crowded with theatre goers), which it never was when we were there, was romantic. The food was great. The service was great. It was quite a surprise as it's found on a quiet side street in the area. I'm glad that I found it. Reasonable prices for the quality of food. The first time I went, I was actually so impressed that I emailed the owner (which I have never done in my life aside from that 1 time). I recommend it if you're in the area!

    very crowded

Frankly, I wasn't too impressed with either food or service or atmosphere. First, they couldn't find our reservation as well as the reservation of another couple next to us, but we were seated promptly nonetheless. But the place is super crowded and tiny, absolutely no space between tables and it's very loud from all that pre-theater crowd -- you almost have to yell to talk to someone across the table. I cannot say the food was bad, but it wasn't anything that I couldn't throw together in 20 minutes in my own kitchen on Monday night, sort of very traditional and uninspiring.

    Excellent ambience & food

My boyfriend and I went to celebrate a special occasion, I would recommend reservations in advance. Everything we ordered was piping hot and delicious. I'm not sure if they have wine by the glass, we ordered a bottle, which was the priciest thing we got. The ambience is great: it is a few steps down from the street, candlelit with simple decorations like wine bottles. The prices are extremly reasonable (starting at about $14 for pasta dishes, up to about $20-25 for most meat/fish entrees). I am used to paying a lot more in NYC for this "feel" of restaurant. Would recommend to anyone! Excellent value!

    Great Restaurant

Our dinner was wonderful at Maria Pia. Cozy atmosphere with impeccable service. I can't wait to go back - everything was delicious from our appetizer to entree. We didn't have enough room for dessert.

    Perfect pre theater dinner spot

Went in a few days ago to see a show, Maria Pia was a few blacks away. Made reservations for 5:30, but didn't need them on a Thursday night that early. The place filled up like crazy by 6:15 however. The place is pretty small, but not cramped. The menu is HUGE. I had the Beef carpaccio which was great, a very big portion. My wife had the Portobello and gorganzola which she said was fantastic ( I don't eat fungi so you'll have to take her word!). I had the Ciopinno which was amazing, the flavor was just right, a little pasta on the side would have been perfect though. My wife was very pleased with her meat tortellini in a cheese sauce. The bill was very reasonable, the service was good. All in all if you are seeing a show in the upper 40's or lower 50's this is a great little place to eat beforehand.

    Nice place to eat

The food was very good. The staff was very helpful. Food did not take long to come. Nice little candlelit place to eat.
