Food was good.
Small, typical NYC restaurant. Reviews were a little mixed but we took a chance and we really enjoyed the food. Service was good too. Only downside was they opened the front full size windows to make the entire restaurant "open air". Way too humid last night so we were really uncomfortable. Next time we'll go back in cooler weather. Conveniently located to Radio City. Definitely give this restaurant a try. Enjoy :)

Tourist from France at Maria Pia
Being there last tuesday for lunch , last day before going back to france, great prosciutto and fish with potatos. Creme brulee as good as the best French . Quiet and nice.

Enjoyed the Meal
I was surprised by the poor reviews. Went there for dinner mid-week in December. We were greeted by friendly staff and seatedright away, as it wasn't that packed. All of the staff were extremely attentive. We never had to ask for anything. Yes, they do give you bread one piece at a time, but that's ok, you could always ask for more, and they did offer. We shared a wonderful pear and arugula salad, then had the cod and bass entrees. They were both excellent! I would go back!

Good food but lame service
Sadly, we ignored the most recent reviews in order to try a new place in the hood. The food was pretty good but the service was as poor as a crappy diner during a busy lunch hour. The waiter had no charm, just came to the table with his order pad (after us having to ask the bus boy to send him over- twice.) We ordered a second round of drinks when our food came but waited more than 10 minutes (our meal almost finished) before the waiter came over to say they ran out of what we were drinking. We will NOT go back. The meal was not cheap ($100 for two people) and There are too many great places in Hells Kitchen to have to deal with such poor service. Too bad. This could be a great go-to neighborhood spot.

a disappointment
I have eaten at Maria Pia for more than 5 years. The service had been friendly and efficient. It was quite the opposite recently. Service was abrupt, we had to ask for water refills. The food was almost dropped on the table. We had a salad and the waiter removed my fork from the salad plate and tossed it onto my bread plate followed by hurriedly placing my main course in front of me from a height of an inch. Our reservations were after 8pm since we didn't want to compete with the theater crowd and could have a relaxed dinner. In between the rush of the waiters to deliver the food and remove the plates, they stood around talking to each other. In as much as the food was fine, we will not eat there again, there are more than enough resturants in the city to have a pleasant meal.

Gratuity
On November11,2009 I had lunch at Maria Pia's with two friends. Our bill came to around $78.00. We left a $12.00 gratuity. As we were leaving thebrestaurant, one of your employees stopped us and demande d an additional $5.oo. Needless to say we were embarrassed. No where on the menu was it stated that a certain dollar or percentage gratuity was expected. The foode was good, but not outstanding. We were each served one thin slice of bread and had to reequest another slice. Maria Pia does not deserve a Zagot rating.

Needs improvement
Walked in early for a 5:30 reservation and was told to wait at the bar, even though the place was empty and my friends were a couple of minutes away. When I asked where the ladies room was, the hostess turned her back. The bartender smiled and pointed me toward the back. When I returned, the bartender told me to sit anywhere. The waiter first removed the chair we had our bags on (we were three at a table for four), then brought it back when I complained. Food was only o.k., the mushroom taglietelle was the hit at the table. Desserts were unspectacular. Maria Pia used to be better. The biggest letdown is the service. I'd rather spend my money were I'm treated as a guest. For the few dollars more, next time I'll choose ViceVersa. Serves me right for trying to save a couple of dollars.
