    Over-rated, Over-priced

The food here is nothing special and for the price it really needs to be. The service was fine and the atmosphere is pleasant. I am puzzled as to how this place got 3 stars. I would say it doesnt even rate a sampling if you are an NYC foodie. Spend your money elsewhre....

    eat but don't sit down

good service, atmosphere, & sommeliers. A lot of people working the floor. The roasted peppers appetisers were simply perfect, the soup was rich as described, overall a decent meal. But this is the real problem; The seats are not comfortable. There are 2 types of chairs...the dark leather ones look nice but are truly uncomfortable, so much that you notice how bad they are within 5 minutes. And the others have no lateral support. Form follows function...this rule was not implemented with the seating. I might write another review to complement George the Maitre'd cuz it appears he runs a good ship there.

marea..a complement to the other two

Ate here on 7/24/09. Had the capesante[crudo],polipo[antipasti],pansotti[pasta],and the branzino entree. All were excellent. Service was also excellent. All that keeps me from giving this place a 5.0 rating across the board is the fact that I've only dined here once. i reserve a bit of the rating for consistency which remains to be seen.

    great all around

Went to Marea with for a special occasion and had a faboulous time. For our appetizers , the Zeppole Fritters were great, but the Astice was alittle salty. Had the spaghtti pasta as our mid course, and it was the best dish all night. Halibut and Scallops for the main dish and both were amazing. Main entrees and pastas are nice size. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, but a little slow. Michael White came over and introduced himself. Highly reccomend.

    Would Not Go Back

Went with a friend. I didn't like Marea at all. I would not go back . The restaurant is very nice looking. The service was fine. However, the food is not good. I started with grilled octopus. It was very salty. ($19 for the appetizer, only one piece.) Then, I had grilled swordfish as the entree.( $36) It was underdone and tough. I did tell the waiter that it was underdone. He offered to take it back but I ate it the way it was. I asked to taste three different red wines. One was 13, one was 15, and the third was 18. I could have sworn that the wine that we chose, which the somelier categorized as the lighest, was the least expensive. When the bill came , we saw that we had been charged $36 for the two glasses. I was negligent not to get the menu and look at the prices. The bill was almost $180. Neither one of us had dessert, or coffee. I left almost 20% as a tip. I should have spoken up. If this should happen again, I certainly would complain.

    Home Run

My wife took me for my birthday. At first they sat us in the back next to a rowdy bunch of guys from NBC that thought they were at Mickey Mantles. The hostess moved us at our request and after that the night was great. Service was impeccable, presentation was superb and the food(especially the pasta, homemade) was great. Wine was reccommended by the waiter and he was spot on. On a side note, they tried to sit 4 different tables back there and all asked to be moved away from the obnoxious table. Chef came out to speak with most of the tables. Just beware of some of the chairs, they have metal and leather...stick to the leather. The metal chairs are very uncomfortable.
