Mexican food?
First of all, I am originally from Los Angeles and we know our Mexican food. So when native New Yorkers tell me this is one of the good Meixcan restaurants in Manhattan, I can only shake my head. I have come to the realization that when it comes to Mexican food, New Yorks just don't get it. Case in point....Mama Mexico had guys in big sombrero's serving something (shrimp tacos....I couldn't recognize it) with mayonnaise...MAYONNAISE! I didn't know mayonnaise was a staple of the Mexican cuisine. The food was overpriced...for limp chips and tasteless food...maybe it was Mexican lite!? I came out there feeling disappointed and missing real Meixcan food.

L.A Native
I was told that Mama Mexico was really good and authentic. I'm Mexican and from L.A so I know real Mexican Food and Mama Mexico was not it. The Guacomole is Great but way to expensive! The food taste like microwave Mexican. The service was poor. The atmosphere was cool only because of the Mariachi! Sorry but this place is not very good and way to expensive.

Never again
Service? There is none. Forty minutes to get the wrong appetizer (the criminally expensive "special" guacamole, which we did not order). Then the manager lied to us, as we waited another hour for average food, served cold. You cannot treat customers with contempt. You just can't. I'm not alone -- look at the other reviews. Obviously, the manager has not.

agree with last post
i agree with the last post. i've been cramped in at the worst possible table on many occasions during off hours. i feel this place is greatly overpriced and overhyped. they think they are far better than what they are. oh, and they basically push the costly, table-side guacamole. worse yet, the last time i was there, the server tried to tell me they no longer had the small side of guacamole. it's unfortunate b/c i've had a few good steaks there. anyway, i now go around the corner to a far more authentic, less expensive mexican restaurant - amazing place with huge portions sans the attitude and fanfare.

Overhyped, Expensive, Unprofessional
I can't imagine these reviews are truthful and genuine. They must be plants. I've given this place three chances. What's the old saying? Fool me once... On ALL THREE occasions, the place was more than half empty, as I deliberately went on off-peak hours. Regardless, they sat me and my companion at the smallest and worst possible table. I had my laptop with me, and I had put it on the chair at the table right next to ours. Even though the restaurant was empty, they sat a couple right next to us in a cramped space, having to separate the tables, and made me GIVE them my laptop to store, so they could use the table for this other couple. The freaking place was empty! We paid too much for dry enchiladas with a very dry and crusty rice that looked neon orange. We were rushed from the moment we sat down. The couple next to us told us they had asked for a window seat, as they were all EMPTY, but were instead seated right there on top of us. This place is ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and try any of the other Mexican places on Broadway except this one. It is overpriced and less-than-mediocre.

Always a party
Mama Mexico is always a party. The mariachi band roams around taking requests and strumming away, decorations are bright and abundant, and the manager occasionally pours free shots directly into restaurant-goers' mouths. Service is extremely attentive. Big menu, tasty food (I'm a fan of the enchiladas del mar, and the margaritas are delicious and come in endless flavors), but you really come here for the atmosphere. Fun for a date or a group, but my only complaint is that it's really loud (at least, on busy evenings), so if you need a more relaxed experience, either come at a low time or don't come at all.

Good food, good sevice, somewhat costly.
Went to Mama Mexico last Friday, around 9pm, it was packed!! We only had to wait 10 minutes for a table. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The service was excellent and the food came quickly. The salsa and guacamole is a must!!!. Food was great but a little pricey. I will go back again. Good place to have dinner and drinks with friends before going to a club.
