    great

I love Mama Mexico!! I am not a fan of spicy food, which is typical of Mexican food, so to find a Mexican restaurant whose food is not spicy was great.. I love the live mariachi and the efficiency of the waiters with refilling the water and the chips... I recommend it to anybody that wants to experience a live Mexican Restaurant.. It is a bit pricey, but so is all good food. The steaks, salads, and most appetizers are amazing and so are the pina coladas- not to mention the tequila shots to the face. However, not ideal for romantic dinners becuase it can get a bit too loud for conversation...

    alllllmost really great....

but the slow service, and pretty over-priced margaritas and food, just wouldn't go back again. we went on a friday night, live mariachi band, really adorable atmosphere...but it took a while for the food and check to come, $9 for about a 12oz. margarita is just way too much, and the food portions were pretty small for the price, too. wanted to love it, but just didn't do it for us.

    $18 for Tiny-Portioned Kid's Meals!

We came here in a group with children - waiter offered "kid's meals" - chicken tacos, chicken fingers, etc. Well, the children all ordered the kid's meals. Imagine our surprise when the bill came and the cost was $18 each for these small meals on small plates. In fact, the adult chicken taco meal was less expensive than the smaller child's chicken taco meal! When we complained to the manager, he brushed us off and walked away. This place is overpriced and service is not good - they continually removed unfinished (and pricey) drinks from our table. We were very disappointed. Great location, ok food, subpar service, overpriced.

    overpriced, loud, mediocre

Way overpriced for run of the mill foood.. It's not bad... the price is just not justified. I don't get why it is always packed. It's the only sit-down Mexican joint on Bway in the 'hood tho, so maybe that has something to do with it. 2 margies and an order of guac ran over $30! Also, agreed with previous reviewers, the musicians are annoying.. but more annoying are drunk patron singing with them. ugh.

    worth the trip up!

I have been to many, many Mexican places in NYC and Mama Mexico stands out as being one of the best! Their service is definitely the best I've ever received in all my time here. Drinks are refilled instantly, chips and salsa replenished before you can even turn your head to ask- drinks are varied and fun and the atmosphere is so cheery that it's almost impossible NOT to be happy and have a good time here! The actual entrees are good, not perfect, but definitely worth the price (it's a little more expensive than your average Mexican joint, but it's far lower than what you have to pay at more upscale places like Dos Caminos or Rosa Mexicana). I certainly think it's worth the trip up Broadway! (best for big groups of people and parties because it's LOUD!)

    Not recommended

Ordered the vegetarian chimichanga. Described on menu as "crispy" topped with melted cheese and green/red sauce. Unfortunately, the "crispy" chimichanga was as wet and soggy as the green/red sauce on top. I ate less than 1/3 of the meal. When questioned how I enjoyed the food I politely said that the chimichanga was soggy, not cripsy; the beans & rice were lukewarm. The manager explained that the chimichanga gets soggy when they put the sauce on top. When I asked why the sauce was not put on the side, there was no answer. To their credit they offered to re-do the meal, but as a native New Yorker, I know better than to go with that request. The owner was present at the restuarant and I told him of my disappointment with the food - he never offered an apology. I stated it would have been nice to at least offer me a cup of coffee on the house.

    No

I went there for a second time and now I am convinced... I won't go back at least I am treated. The tables are so close to each other that my ears suffered by listening personal stories of people from the table next to me. And on the top of that, the restaurant had loud live music which at the beginning was colorful but two songs after became annoying. As per the food, the guacamole was great but the meal was nothing special -same taste as the one I buy for lunch in a chain restaurant. Price wise, they want to pretend that they are in the high end but no no no... Bottom line: atmosphere and food quality doesn't match price.
