    Lousy service and unprofessional manager

I've been to Mama Mexico a few times before and generally had a good time and good food. But check your bill and anticipate unprofessional service and management.

    Best place ever!

If you want a great mexican food go to Mama Mexico. The service was great, the mariachi guys were friendly. One of the managers was very helpful. Great place, great service.

    They used to be good

I had eaten in Mama Mexico from the first time it opened up. And they used to have great prices, and great food. Then something happen. They got on the food channel, they started gaining popularity. Then one day on one of my visits I received a menu without any prices. That should have tipped me off. Yes there were some physical improvements to the place and the food was suddenly in smaller portions but garnished like those upscale restaurants. Again, that should have tipped me off. , Drinks were o.k but not great, I have had better. The food was good but small portions. Then the bill came and it was too expensive. The guacamole was expensive too. Unfortunately that was my last visit. I am looking for a new Mexican restaurant now.

    Pricey

I didn't even have dessert or drinks and I paid 120. Price is not important if the food was great and service was on point but it wasn't. I literally had to wait 20 to 30 mins for service, food and even the bill. Also, the restaurant is too small for the amount of people it attempted to service.

Dine with caution, or not at all.

Being a local resident, I've had the opportunity to eat at Mama Mexico's several times with different company, and I never look forward to it. The food is just ok, but much better Mexican food can be found only a few blocks away up Amsterdam, and for cheaper. Entrees are ridiculously overpriced. Are you willing to pay $11 for guacamole? Sure they make it fresh at the table, but I find it lacks much flavor at all. Fresher isn't always better. The musicians are a nice touch, but sometimes make the restaurant too loud to even think in, let alone carry on a conversation. The frozen margaritas are the best part, but at $40 a pitcher they're ridiculously overpriced, just like everything else. Bottom line, pass on this. If it's Mexican you want, you can do better almost anywhere else in Morningside Heights.

    Best Evening so far....

Dinner here was the best we had in our three nite stay along 3rd Ave. Gratious, friendly and grateful owner visited us several times and decanted TEQUILA down our throats. Live mariachi band added to the fun and atmosphere. Easily the best time we've had here. Part of having a good time is starting it yourselves and allowing the restaurant personnel to participate.

How much to lose the mariachi band?

I love Mexican food, but my recent dinner at Mama Mexico was so unpleasant as to be humorous. 1) The margaritas were mostly water and overpriced. 2) The food was not fresh and cold by the time it reached the table. (And overpriced.) 3) It took half an hour to get a menu, and forty minutes to get the check. 4) Every half hour, a mariachi band came and played - at FULL volume - right over our heads. It wasn't just that it rendered conversation impossible - it's incredibly painful to the ears. And they would not go away.
