I visited last year and thought Magnolia made a decent cake. This year I'm a couple of blocks away from this branch so it's my "local" for a sweet fix. Tonight was the last straw. Just bought 4 cakes for me and my partner. Cake is just okay but the frosting was piled stupidly thick and was sickly as heck. There was also some bizarre almost spicy aftertaste to the frosting or the jimmies. Hate to say it but even a chain like Crumbs manages far superior cakes. Of all the cupcakes I've tasted this fortnight in New York, Magnolia are way down the list.

Three words: RED VELVET CHEESECAKE! This is the only reason I'm a return customer. Don't get me wrong! Decent bakery. Can I make/have I made better baked goods at home? Yes. Can you get better in local non-chain shops? Most certainly. Is there anywhere else that you've ever seen red velvet cheesecake...and...if you have...had it done as well as at Magnolia and served with such impeccable service? Highly unlikely! I'm Mr. Frugal and I will GLADLY pay $6 for a mini-personal cheesecake off this calibre. I bow to their cheesecakey awesomeness. But I won't pay the prices for their small, yet decent cupcakes and other goodies.

Starting with the positive, The chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting was enjoyable, not too sweet, frosting was rich, the cake was light. The vanilla cake was also good. The cake is dense and reminded of of many from scratch cakes I've had, so thats a good thing! As for the bad, the vanilla frosting is wayyyyyyyy to sweet. Will never get one of their cupcakes with this on it again. Although I may never go back because I don't think you get your moneys worth...I prefer Crumbs over Magnolias....but prefer a homemade cupcake over both any day! NOTE: I actually went to the newest location in Grand Central, but since the product is the same, I am writing my review here! (did walk past 49th street location, and there was a line out the door, looked super chaotic).

Best cupcakes ever! No matter which location I go to I manage to shove at least 2 in my mouth and then another 2 when I get home and feel guilty for about 30 seconds! Crave those great red velvet cupcakes and even the plain vanilla ones are good. Oh and I how can I forget the banana pudding and the carrot cake! Worth every penny and bite!

Magnolia isn't terrible, but not great either. I was craving a cupcake last night, and stumbled upon this Magnolia location. I've read past comments about snooty SITC wannabes coming here, and I definitely got that impression. The atmosphere was slightly chaotic; I wasn't sure where the right line was at first to order. I also noticed that some of the cupcake flavors weren't labeled (I asked for a cupcake with the pretty yellow frosting, then the guy behind the counter informed me that it was banana flavor. How was I supposed to know?) So I got two cupcakes - one vanilla cake w/purple frosting and a peace sign, one Devil's food. The vanilla cake itself was yummy, though the frosting was way too sweet! It had a weird aftertaste, too. I tried the frosting on the other one, and it wasn't that great either, so I left the box next to a bum who was sleeping nearby. I'd say overall ok

I heard this place was supposed to have great cupcakes as evidenced by the long lines people wait on to get it. My line wasn't too long but after the wait instead of delicious all I got was disappointed. I had the red velvet cupcake and it was small for the price, very dry and not really all that tasty. Tried again a second time thinking maybe it was an off day for the bakery but nope same result second time around. Makes me not want to try anything else they offer. I don't get why there's such hype about this place. My money is better spent at another place that sells a better product like Crumbs. Only postive was staff was friendly and decor was decent.
