Lorenzo & Maria Kitchen

This is the real deal. Fresh and high quality ingredients are prepared perfectly; just enough so that the dish can be warmed at home without overcooking (as long as you know what you're doing). The selection is large and varied. It's just tough to make a choice when seeing how delicious they all look, if you're at the store. Otherwise, a phone order is easy; they tell you the daily menu. What a treat!

This place has a good reputation on the UES but I doubt most of the patrons actually go there themselves...they send their staff. The food is impeccably prepared but I find it bland and it seems they add sugar to every dish. What I really take issue with is how the owner treats her staff and often her customers. Very odd environment.

Wonderful food, owner drives everyone nuts in this small little store--shouting at kitchen staff, telling customers to wait, as only she can take the money, staff must wrap takeout. This is all worth it because the food is top restaurant quality.

I have been a customer of Lorenzo & Maria's Kitchen for over 15 years-maybe more I can't keep count. Yes, the prices are high, but so is the quality. Maria buys and expertly prepares some of the best food in Manhattan. In my view, for the money, this is the best deal in town. I never had a bad selection from her place. Yes, maybe there is some commotion in the shop, but it is a small business and the kitchen is open to the shop. By the way, since you can see into the kitchen, you can also see that it is absolutely spotless. Not many places in NY can make that boast.

No question, the food is excellent. However, this is one tough place to like. If you ask to taste something, management makes a face. Worse, they charge for gravy, in fact once you ask for say a pound of something, staff disappears to cut and wrap your meal, which turns out, once you open the package, more than you asked for, plus the plentiful sauce or gravy they also charge for - pretty damn expensive! There is often a lot of noisy vocalising going on - usually management getting angry with customers on the phone. In short, the food is about the best you can buy, but the ambiance is dissapointing as can be.

Chicken pot pie to swoon for and cold asparagus with dill vinaigrette that was simply heavenly compelled me to put this on my restaurant list despite a surprise hefty delivery fee for being at the edge of their delivery range. The servings are good for 2-3 meals and all come with instructions for reheating ...and a lotta love.
