At one time Live Bait was one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood, their food, atmosphere and price made for that rare combination of a terrific find - those days are long gone though. The decor is still the same but going to Live Bait now is akin to going to a zombie restaurant. It is just the shell that you are seeing, nothing that was the heart of the place that made it so very appealing is there anymore. The menu apparently changed (maybe new owners) but it is decidedly a change for the worse - Southern standards that Live Bait at one time had are gone and the few items from the old menu still remaining are almost inedible. I had the Plantation Gumbo, it tasted off and had the appeal of slop. Oh, and a little thing like providing cornbread with your Gumbo, that’s an extra now as in an extra $3. It’s always sad when an old favorite runs off the rails but the best way to describe Live Bait is a restaurant that has jumped the shark.

what happened?! i've been going to live bait since 2002. i've brought everyone i know - family, friends, coworkers - here. well on mon night 11/11 we went, and although same tables, chairs, music, fish on the wall were there, apparently, nothing else was the same. no more cornbread/biscuits in a basket. no more crab cake sandwich. no more spicy mayo. the waitress said that they have a "new chef with new receipes". well, my blackened chicken sandwich - which should be pretty hard to mess up, tasted like a mcdonald's grilled chicken sprinkled with pepper that you buy at dinnertime - except it was cooked at lunch. my friend - who is from maryland, and has sworn by live bait's crab cakes, was so disappointed and deceided that he won't be back. and the plates were new and were square. the fries served in these little tin buckets. it reminded me of when the teams on top chef are doing restaurant wars and they try to think of something clever to use in their pretend restaurant. well, if the food and atmospehere is good, you don't need new square plates with fancy fry containers. the tv's on the walls were gone, so i guess they don't want you to ever think of this as a sports bar (which i'm not sure anyone ever did...). and around 630pm, they basically turned the lights out. not dimmed them. turned them off. i'm so disappointed that such a good place, with good food, and a good vibe, has turned into somewhere ridiculous - with poor food. oh, and i should add - i told my waitress all of the various critiques of the new menu, vibe, etc - including how terrible my sandwich was, and she just said "ohhh, i'm sorry".

...but it's one of the damnest cool places in NYC. Totally casual. The beer is cold. The food is great, and the atmosphere is very friendly We had a blast here. I go here whenever I'm In NYC.

Had a great time with a bunch of my girls here. I wasn't sure about the food bc it looks a little divey and visually, the menu looked like it was an arts and crafts project by a 3rd grader, but it was the complete opposite. Food was so good(had the fresh Atlantic Salmon), great happy hour, great service, great energy from the bartenders and a great location. I will definitely be back with my girlies :)

Recently I had the pleasure to visit Live Bait. I try to visit once before but place seemed to be way over packed. So I tried visiting on Monday. Live Bait is very casual and comfy place to go with a friend or group of friends. It has bar in the beginning and dining tables in the back. Of course guys love the surrounding TV in each corner. For me I just love the food. I ordered one of their specialty Prawn Fritters as an appetizer. Crispy on the outside and very moist and marinated to my liking on the inside. I would definitely get it again. As a meal I had the BBQ chicken and rib combo platter. You had a choice of two (fixins) sides so I got the Yam Candied and sauteed spinach. I wasn't crazy for the Yam or bit salty spinach but the rib and chicken was so good!! BBQ sauce was so delicious and they had enough amount of sauce, as other BBQ place seemed to limit the amount. I would definitely recommend and also will go back to this restaurant. Looking forward to other things on the menu. =)

This used to be a great place. Haven't visited in 6 months and todays visit was disappointing. Did they get a new cook? New owners? Something important has changed...The cornbread minimuffins recipe changed for the worse. The shrimp bisque had no body and was waaay to salty, there were only 2 other couples in the place and the food took forever to come. When it got to us the chicken and rice was cold from sitting and had to be sent back...It was once a great little place. What happened?

Its packed in the front because of the bar area, but sometimes really empty in the seatin areas. It is really loud! I ordered a side of mac n cheese to go.It was soo delicious. It taste just the way I make it! Cheesy, perfect amount of creaminess! With the cheese and bread crumbs on top! Yum! It is so much better than S'Mac. I recommend!
