After searching all over menupages for a place to eat brunch following a Sunday morning event at the 92nd St. Y, I came across Lex Restaurant, which, unbelievably, is almost directly across the Avenue from the Y in an area fairly lacking in nicre eateries. Admittedly, the reviews were yo-yo-s: either "fabulous" or "poor." But all the reviews were for dinner, and we decided to give it a try for brunch. We were four people. We had: 2 Cobb salads; 1 eggs Benedict; 1 rigatoni with sausage and Mozzarella. All the food was perfectly prepared. The hot dishes (even the poached eggs) were steaming hot on arrival. The rigatoni was NOT overcooked. The salad greens were cold and fresh, the chicken breast grilled but not dry, and the bacon was crisp and hot, with no grease at all. Plus, the bread was warm and fresh. It is served with a bowl of EVOO, but they were happy to bring us a plate of butter as well. Food prices ranged from $14 (eggs) to $18 (pasta dish), with salad in between. Portions were generous. Three of us had wine, which was served in beautiful, thin Bordeaux stemware, and at $10 a glass an uncharacteristically generous pour, probably 5-6 oz. Pros: Professional service, clean, bright surroundings with linen tablecloths and napkins. Quality ingredients, prepared perfectly. Fair prices. Con: Bentwood chairs (what I call "ice cream parlor" chairs), with small seats don't encourage lingering over your meal. We didn't have coffee, or dessert, so can't speak for them, or for dinner, but I'd definitely go for brunch again.

My friend and I had brought a Groupon coupon for dinner and had made a reservation for 8:30. We were kept waiting more than half an hour, were not offered a drink or snack at the bar, and were finally seated at the same table we saw empty when we arrived. The waiter was testy when we asked him to repeat his description of menu items (neither of us is hard of hearing, but we were seating right under a loudspeaker). We ordered an appetizer right away and shortly thereafter ordered our entrees (fish). Half an hour after the appetizer dishes were cleared, we asked how much longer we would have to wait for the entree, and were lectured that our ordering the entrees separately had delayed it. (Of course -- but it should not have delayed it so long.) At every point we were met with sour-faced discourtesy. The food was lovely, but these folks must have been having a bad day, and consequently so did we. To add insult to injury, they tried to charge us for a beer we did not drink and the tip was included in the bill.

Delightful. Lovely place, good menu and delicious meal - not rushed, not loud - SO happy to find the 'real deal' in this neighborhood.

I recently went to The Lex to celebrate my sisters birthday. I picked it solely on location since its closer to home and we didn't want to go too far. The restaurant is located in a lovely area which is a definite plus. As we approached inside we were greeted my a lovely young lady that took our coats and seated us immediately . The decor is traditional yet very elegant. It was just what I was looking for in order to celebrate my sisters birthday. As I looked around I noticed there were a lot of couples and families. Our waiter was very attentive and didn't skip a beat even though the place was somewhat busy. I had seen the menu previously here on Menu Pages, the menu has a wide variety and...hold, the best part..A FULL BAR! Lol okay, back to the food...We ordered Crab Cakes and the Egg Plant Parmesean for starters, which were both exquisite! As a main course I had the special; which was the Lobster and Crab Meat Ravioli infused in a Vodka Sauce which was to die for. I enjoyed my meal very much and was lucky enough to have some of my sister's dish; The Scallopini Combo. The Scallopini Combo came with shrimp, veal and chicken alongside came mashed potatoes and veggies. Her dish was amazing as well the veal and the chicken were very tender and the mashed potatoes tasted like mommas home cooking :) Needless to say, my visit to The Lex Restaurant was very pleasant and I will definitely be revisiting this great restaurant in the near future.
