Classic French, and excellent value !
You don't come here for the decor, it could use some refreshing and updating. But the food is amazing! The first course is filling-- pate is delicious, and the variety of crudite is complete. One could almost make a meal of that by itself! Then comes the entree. Nice presentation, high quality and good portions. I went for the first time about 4 weeks ago and have now dined here 4 times since, 3 dinners and 1 lunch. It is perhaps the best value in NYC, and it is now very high on my list of places to frequent. Service is not the most polished or formal or friendly, but it is timely. I've had the cordon bleu twice (excellent!), the boeuf bourguinon (tender, plentiful and a rich sauce), and the chicken in a garlic sauce (lunch, delicious). Dining companions have had the steak (rave review and described the bearnaise as perhaps the best) and another had the coq au vin ("good"). You will not be disappointed here, nor will you leave hungry! Enjoy!!

Splendid Find
After seeing the recent Woody Allen movie "Midnight in Paris" which all 3 of us loved, we decided to stay with the theme and look for a small French restaurant near the theater on 60th St . and Third Ave. We stumbled upon Les Sans Culottes but being a Saturday night we were told without a reservation they could not accommodate us. We were disappointed and I guess it showed. The gal said we could take the table by the door if we wanted and fortunately we decided to do that. We had a fabulous meal. The sausage selection and the fruit/vegetable basket arrived at the same time. We were like 3 children eating ice cream sundaes. Both were delicious and there was so much there. The fruit/vegetable basket is so full we didn't even get close to the bottom. By the time our entrees came we felt we wouldn't have room to eat, but the 2 fish dishes and the chicken dish were so delicous we ate every morsel. I also have to add the portions are very generous. Time for dessert and again we thought we were too full but again we found a way to devour the chocolate mousse which 2 of us ordred and the flan for our other friend. Again, terrific and just the right portion, not too much, not too little. Oh, by the way 2 glasses of wine and 1 coke and it was one of the most reasonably priced dinners any of us had in a very long time. We were not rushed and our service was excellent. We have promised ourselves to go back and visit this little gem over and over again. Well worth the money and a very NYC experience.

My First French Restaurant
I came to this quaint French restaurant over 10 years ago with a girl friend, which is now my wife and had a great time prior to going to a movie. The food was plentiful and very flavorful. We actually started off with the "appetizer" of sausages, pate, fruits and vegetables basket with delicious French mustard that was so good that I actually filled up only on the appetizer and wine. I enjoyed the French cuisine, conversation and service we received, and while eating the appetizer and savoring the wine we decided to cancel the movie. We have come back a few times since and always enjoy this restaurant⦠I have not been back to the restaurant in a little over 5 years since we moved out of the City but I am in the City now and can not wait to go back⦠My wife and I will post my after 5 years review soon. Ok Cheap Eat
We had the lunch pre-fix for $16.50 last Sunday and for the price, could not complain much about it. We had trout and seafood pasta and both dishes were good. Appetizer is just too much and we could not care for those sausages and huge basked of raw veggies that cluttered our table. It's a good place to go when you're very hungry and don't want to spend much $.

Hidden gem in plain sight
One has to know the meaning of the restaurant's name to get it. This is not meant to be a fancy lavish place with many a finery where you would hope to meet Mary Antoinette and her entourage. It is for the ordinary guys -- like the men that toiled during the ten-year long French revolution -- who would long for a hearty and good quality French meal without losing their shirts. The restaurant makes this point by serving a very substantial appetizer ensemble even before giving you the menu. The pate, especially, is extraordinary. Try the duck, or the steaks, which are our favorites. Very French, very good quality, very satisfying. The staff are very friendly and the service is excellent. Too much red in the ambience? Well, don't expect otherwise when the theme is the French Revolution. We go to this place again and again whenever we travel from Europe to this great city. Another great place that serves good French food without causing you to apply for chapter 11 is Chez Nepoleon on 50 W between 8th and 9th.

A TRUE GEM
Friday night party of four. Small and intimate with the likes of Piaf playing softly in the back ground. We informed our waiter that we were not going to the theater so as not be rushed. One out of town couple who frequents NYC were thrilled with the "appetizer" of sausages and pate and crudite basket. For the reviewer who stated that sausages are "German" you obviously have not traveled Europe very much. These were very much the type of sausages that you would find in the outskirts of Paris or any country in Europe. All very tasty as was the pate. Dinner was truly wonderful from begining to end . We were never rushed and had ample time to talk and catch up. Will defenitly return and highly recommend. It's not fancy but if you look up "Sans Coulotte" you will understand the decor and the restaurant.
