Great lunch!
Went in for lunch and was initially concerned because of how busy they were. Even with the rush that had the staff moving around quickly, they were unbelievably efficient and so nice. The food came out relatively fast for how busy they were and was delicious. I had the Mouclade mussels and have to go back for all the others. Thanks to everyone that works there! The only drawback is that their air conditioning is far from strong.

Great Food, Needs Renovation
My wife and I ate here last weekend and had some mixed thoughts. The 'party room' in the rear was where we were first seated, but the vinyl bench seat fabric was torn and the room was very warm. The low ceiling and large private party in the room didn't help. Not a very good first impression. We asked to be moved into the main dining room where the bar is located and this was much better. We had the steak and frites and 'planche de grillades', an assortment of small steaks. The onion soup was standard (not TOO salty) and the steaks were done to our liking with smooth, buttery flavor. The entire interior is in need of renovation, though, to get rid of worn seating as well as those horrible plastic 'turbo' fans screwed into the walls to move the air around. Time for some investment, guys! Great food in a bistro environment all the same and highly recommend.

beef bourguignon
wanted to finish my last workday of the year with a tasty beef bourguignon so Les Halles came to mind, what i got was about 12 pieces of 3/4 inch beef which i must admit was tender a tiny potato cut in half, what must have been a tenth of a carrot diced in 1/8 inch cubes and half dozen teenie tiny onions, the result was by far the worst tasting bourguignon i've ever had in my life, what a disgrace for a restaurant that normally dishes out good food! was the chef doing some pre-new year's eve drinking? and maybe spilled some in the bourguignon which was definately drunk of wine

delivery was great
i like the park avenue les halles a lot, so when my date suggested that we order in from the john street outpost for dinner, i agreed. we settled on - cheeseburger w/ frites (delicious, perfectly rare) - escargot (garlicky, herbal, fantastic) - frisee salad aux lardons (we had a poached egg added, and everything arrived perfectly. a poached egg arriving perfectly? i swear to god, it did) - mac & cheese (broiled so it was crispy browned on the top) fine quality french bistro food. going to buy bigger pants.

The Best Steak We've Had in Years
On a recommendation we made the trek down to Les Halles for steak, frites, and salad. We were not disappointed. We each started with an appetizer to share, me the mussels, my companion the french onion soup. They were both delightful. When our main course arrived, I must admit I was a little apprehensive of the steak, namely because it just looked like it would be bland. Boy, was I ever wrong. It was seasoned to perfection. And although my companion's medium-ordered steak was served medium-rare she enjoyed it just the same. The only drawback was the overly boisterous bartender. We had the displeasure of listening to the same oud story three times to different waiters. And while foul language is not necessarily a turn off to me, it seemed he was misusing the effect--was completely unnecessary and therefore became annoying. However, that being said, we will definitely return. If you're in the mood for a steak, this is the spot.

Will definitely be going back....
I was looking for a restaurant in the city that I could take a few steak lovers from out of town without spending a fortune. I found Les Halles off of menupages and was concerned about the mixed reviews especially with regard to the service. Along with everyone else in my party, I was very happy with Les Halles. The food was excellent and the service was very good (there was a bit of a long wait for the server to intially get to our table but after that she was very attentive). My fiance ordered the roasted beets with chevre appetizer and it was beautiful and delicous. Three of us ordered variations on the steak frites (with shallot sauce, blue cheese sauce) and I ordered the Alsatian beer sausage with mushroom mashed potatoes. The steak was excellent, perfectly cooked (ordered medium and rare). The frites were crispy and very flavorful. The sausage was wonderful and so was the mashed potatoes. For dessert we ordered the creme brulee and chocolate mousse and both were rich creamy and delicious. The prices are very reasonable, I have paid twice as much in NYC for food that didn't even come close the quality and flavor of the dishes we had at Les Halles. As far as the atmosphere goes, it may not appeal to everyone but it was certainly my kind of place. The restaurant is not noisy so you can enjoy a conversation with your party and the building feels like a cozy old place with dark wood, remnant features from the buidling's previous life (like elevator knobs on the wall), and it's tucked away into a corner on John St. off broadway which gives it a hidden treasure kind of feel. I highly recommend Les Halles, I'll certainly be returning for future visits.

Not For Me
What a rip off. They display a sidewalk sign saying 50% off wines during happy hour, show you a menu of wine choices and then when you get your bill they say that the ones you had weren’t the specials. $12 for a glass of California wine? Never again.
