We went for dinner .The potato pancakes and choice of beers were excellent. Pretzel w/ mustard was good. They even offer a Gurken pickle as a side with a rather nice different flavor. Then dinner came and unfortunately the food went downhill as fast as Franz Klammer. Three of us chose Schweinbraten mit Spaetzle. (roast pork) The pork was way overcooked terribly dry, the spaetzle was butterry but had about 1lb of salt on it. Red cabbage and sauerkraut tasted as though they were right out of a jar not homemade. The other dinner was Rindergoulasch (beefstew). The meat was good however along with the mashed potatoes, once again, had tons of salt. Way overboard. So if you should venture there definitely have the potato pancakes and of course plenty of beer, but for dinner possibly try something else.

I've gone to this beer hall twice. I went once during a lunch break from work and sat at the bar and had a decent experience. The bar maid was a bit curt with us at that point but it mostly didn't bother me, the beer and the food were both excellent and the lunch special was a good value. THEN there was the second time. The waiter we had was extremely apathetic, forgot our drink orders and kept threatening to "kick us out" not because of anything we'd done but because apparently there was ritzier clientele that needed the tables. Never in my 25 years have I ever been asked to leave a restaurant because there were people waiting to take a table. And we were continuing to spend money! We'd spent over $100 between 5 people and were on our way to more. At any rate, at least the food, particularly the currywurst, was strong and the $10 liters of beer can't be beat. I would still advise that you avoid this place at all cost at the dinner hour or if you're there at the dinner hour maybe go to the bar. Ultimately, this place broke my heart. I was excited about it from my previous experience but I can't abide not being comfortable while I eat.

This is a good place for dinner, a quick snack or drinks--or all three, as a matter of fact. It's reasonably priced compared to other NYC German restaurants and the portions are quite big. The atmosphere gives a casual, indoor beerhall feel. The service was also excellent. I experienced really attentive and warm waitstaff. My only (minor) complaint is that the German potato salad, my favorite German dish, had too much of a strong taste. They could go less heavy on the garlic and salt for that one. Everything else was delicious, including the wide selection of beer!

I would definitely recommend this restaurant to those seeking good German food. My girlfriend and I both enjoyed our meals very much. The portion sizes were great so you get your money's worth. Because we were tourists, we got the camera out to take pictures of each other, and the waitress was nice enough to offer to take ours together. However, her service seemed to have been compromised when a party she knew arrived at the restaurant. The German atmosphere was there although I don't believe either of the people we encountered working there were German.

I must express my disappointment. We were there a few weeks back to celebrate 2 birthdays. First, the table was not set up for the correct amount of people or at least for normal size humans. Instead of trying to rectify the situation the waitress perpetuated the situation. She kept on insisting that the reservation was for 15 but the table just didn’t fit 15 normal size ppl, or she didn’t know how to count. Another customer had suggested that they move so they can put another table together. Secondly, the food was EXTREMELY salty; I don’t think there was any taste except for SALT. Thirdly, the service was very poor, it was hard to get the waitress’ attention and when you got her attention she doesn’t remember what you ordered. I must of asked her 5 times to bring over a pitcher of diet coke and the 3rd time I reminded her she responded by saying that she was bringing out the food order and she couldn’t bring everything with an attitude. Ok, then she forgets again so I had to reminder her again and then she brought a glass of coke instead of a pitcher, so it takes 5 reminders and over 45 minutes to get one drink order right? I’m sure if it was beer that would have come out right away! Over all the service was very poor and the food was overly salty. I would not recommend this to anyone.

We came here to celebrate a friends birthday because we read good reviews about this place. Unless you're a big fan of salty food and waitress with bad memory and attitude, this is not the place for you. Every dish on the menu was salty. After a few bites of my meal (some sausage dish), I was dying of thirst. Ask the waitress to get us a pitcher of Diet Coke. We must have asked her 4 times in a span of 15 minutes. The girl just kept forgetting. It was just very frustrating...At least half the table had fun since they had some german beer.

We've been coming here for years and think that this is one of the best neighborhood bars in the Village. A great place to go to avoid the see and be seen crowd. The food is good and the staff definitely takes time to get to know their customers. Try the lebekase sandwich for something a little different. Definitely recommended for food or just a night out drinking.
