One of the better Vietnamese restaurants
I have been on a Vietnamese Food hunt here. The pho was actually not bad, although the beef slices could be a little thinner. Small portions, which is perfect if your goal is to try a couple of items. Of course, I only had soup and the first course. I enjoyed the shrimp roll. Atmosphere is a bit overrated by the others. I mean, it is different, but nothing phenomenal. Overall, a good experience. Would return for a small soup.

Wonderful
We went to Le Colonial to celebrate a birthday. The service was excellent, the presentation was wonderful and the meal was great. The menu was limited if you are not a fish eater but I would recommend this restaurant as a great dining option.

Upstairs = romance
Came here with a date and ate upstairs. I kind of had lower expectations as I've heard and read mixed reviews, but it was quite lovely. Food was incredibly appetizing and wine top-notch. Service accomodating but unintrusive. Most of all, a great romantic spot. Music and ambiance is sexy; even though the music can be a little on the loud side, I did see lots of enamored couples whispering away in every nook of the restaurant. Will definitely be back.

Trust me...
As far as I am concerned the most authentic and high-quality Vietnamese food I have had yet in NYC. The Bo Luc Lac is made as it was when I was in Saigon. The crispy fried fish is fantastic (and I don't like fish). The pho, unfortunately is served in a small bowl, but very tasty. Iced coffee is excellent (though they do the preparation for you- I prefer to do it myself-- it's part of the fun). My friend and his parents were visiting from California and are from S. Vietnam (and very critical of Vietnamese cuisine). I took them there the first night they were in NYC, and they went back 2 more times on the same trip. I consider that high praise. I am also a huge fan of Saigon Grill (UES and UWS) and can regularly be found there. These restaurants are centainly not in the same price range, however!

Not recommended
I am currently eating Vietnamese from Le Colonial on 57th at my office-- I am having the tamarind shrimp soup...which is on the better side of average if you can get past the over cooked shrimp with the heads still on...and a barely passable chicken mango curry with limp stringbeans, tasteless chicken and a powerless curry sauce. I am disappointed. You won't find me recommending this restaurant to anyone.

Spectacular in every way
Went here with some friends for lunch the other day and was knocked off my feet. Fantastic surroundings, amazing food, and sterling service. I had the pho, which was good, but my friends got the tuna tartare which I was insanely jealous about. For my main I had the special of the day - large prawns cooked with asparagus, onions and mango in a savory sauce (the waitress advised me that it was spicy, but it was completely mild to my tastes). For dessert I had an amazing banana beignet - more like a banana eggroll - with vanilla icecream and some morrocan mint tea. It was the perfect meal in a luxurious, but understated, setting. Would be a great spot for a romantic dinner.

Amazing Vietnamese food!
My dad LOVES Vietnamese food and my mom and I recently took him to Le Colonial for his birthday. He absolutely loved it. The staff was amazing, the atmosphere wonderful and the food, delicious!
