you're better off anywhere else
everything about this place is disappointing....the food isn't good, service is slow and unfriendly, and the place can get crazy loud....and it's not cheap either....start off with the $9 guacamole in a very small bowl (and it looks like it came straight out of a jar), and then work your way onto a greasy main dish....or better yet, just go elsewhere

So - So...
I went with a bunch of girlfriends to La Palapa last night. They were very accomodating for a large party. The staff was very nice and pleasant. Amosphere was not fancy but cozy. The chips and guac were good; a fan of their salsa verde. The entree's however were disappointing. I concur with the review below that the rice and beans that come on the side were the best part of the meal. The fish tacos you couldn't tell it was fish, and the chicken enchiladas were so spicy they had no other taste. In the end the food is what matters and compared to other mexican restaurants in the city it was just subpar. We usually stay for dessert but all so dissapointed in the food we didn't bother.

Would not return
Went here for dinner with some girlfriends last night. We were seated promptly, however once seated we ordered guac and chips. It took about 20 minutes (and asking the waiter 2x) for them to arrive. Once we ordered the food arrived pretty quickly. It was just OK. 2 of the 4 dishes ordered were so spicy they could barely eat them (and it didn't say spicy on the menu). I think the best thing we ordered was the corn on the cob appetizer and the rice and beans on the side of the dish. All in all it was an OK experience, but there are many many better Mexican restaurants in NYC over this one. Don't think I will be returning any time soon.

Casual Girls' Dinner
I went here with a girlfriend when everything else on a Fri night had a long wait. We were seated right away (at 7pm so it was a little early). The atmosphere is not super trendy but it was cozy. Service was excellent- fast and our waiter was super nice. Sangria was awesome, all the food was just fabulous. Very tasty. We shared an appetizer and grilled cactus, and also had the fish tacos entree. Everything was very flavorful and prices were not bad at all! I will definitely be back here for a low key night!

Great Mexican Food!!
Very cozy, great decoration, brick walled interior giving it that rustic mexican feel... We ordered a Tamal de Rajas for an appetizer, didn't look like the typical tamales my grandmother in mexico makes, but it was amazing! You could really distinguish the taste of the maiz and rajas which were also complemented so well by the fresh cheese and pumpkin flavors which are the non-traditional additions.. For the main course ordered Pato al Mole Negro Oaxaqueño and Camarones al Mole Rojo de Morelos. I can't say i've ever had duck in Mexico, but the meat was so tender and juicy and the black mole was just like the one I tried when I was in Oaxaca. The dish was also served with spinach, which I felt was good but didn't complement the red rice and mole as well as a side of brown beans would have. The camarones in mole rojo was a more traditional dish, with red rice and refried brown beans served with tortillas... The red mole was delicious, also very authentic. All of this accompanied by Pacifico beers and mini glasses of Herradura tequila, I really felt like I found what I was looking for in my search for a great, authentic mexican dining experience... Highly recommended.

Truly Mexican
Excellent choice is what we all said after last night's dinner. With two Mexican friends in tow, the verdict among all is that this was a true Mexican (not Tex) place in NY. Service was also the high note. Definitely coming back.

Yes, Yes, and No
Stumbled on this place the other night, when Mexican seemed just the thing. The noise level was loud, loud, and after two big groups of 20-somethings were seated nearby, grew deafening. There is nothing to absorb the noise, and they keep the music (golden oldies) cranked up. But... the food was surprisingly good. This is Mex-Mex, not Tex-Mex, with a lot of regional specialties. The Oaxacan mole negro on the duck was complex, mysterious, and the chard with it was a great idea to cut through the richness. Shrimp with tamarind was lovely, and a special of some sort of pulled pork with a pineapple-something-something rub with two cheeses and three salsas and fresh tortillas was irresistable. A good margarita, a helpful waiter and nice hostess. The "platos fuertes" are mostly in the teens, which is not expensive for food of this quality and quantity. I would most definitely go back, but guys, do something about the sound level please!
