Having been a longtime fan of the previous resto at this location (Thé Adore), I was very happy to find that La Maison du Croque Monsieur easily fills the big shoes of its lovely predecessor. The $7 Mr. Gore (portobello mushroom, sun-dried tomato, pine nuts and Coach Farm goat cheese) was simply fantastic, even if couldn't taste the pine nuts. At $2, the 12 oz can of Coke is a bit overpriced, but the majority of the menu items are fairly priced. They only use sourdough bread, which is perhaps the best bread for grilled cheese, as it is dense enough to stand up to grilling and browns nicely. But it would be nice to see them expand the bread options. Cheddar on Shepherd's bread, Swiss on potato bread, brie on baguette, provolone on rye, havarti on whole wheat, muenster with pumpernickel: The list of yummy bread/cheese combinations is long. After my first visit, I emailed them with three suggestions: coat hooks (my friend and I sat at the backless stools on the first floor and had to stow our bulky winter coats on the floor); aluminum can recycling (there was nowhere to put my empty can of Coke) and the addition of vegan cheese options. They replied an hour later and said they would look into all my suggestions. That's the kind of customer service that will help make La Maison du Croque Monsieur become a neighborhood stalwart. I was very impressed and I look forward to many repeat visits, especially during the cold winter months.
