I can't believe I just found this place!

I've been living a few blocks away for a year now and I just found this place. The tacos are as close to Mexico (and Mexican prices) as you can find anywhere (we're talking real tacos in warm tortillas). Many different choices and all so tasty and cheap! This place is one of the best finds in the city. Cool place too with outdoor seating in the middle of the square.

    SuperFantastico

Ok I have to admit we haven't eaten in the restaurant, only the diner part. (my relatives love the restaurant & we're trying it soon) We can't get enough of this place. It's good good great. The tortilla soup ummmmmm, absolutely delicious fresh wonderful. Fantastic tacos yes. Surprisingly, a really good charred hamburger of all things. We love to sit behind the windows and watch the world go by (on a rainy day it's really neat) and get just one more taco. What sweet & friendly service, so patient. I want to go back NOW.

    Best Tacos in NYC

Since moving to New York from the West Coast three and a half years ago, I had yet to find a good authentic Mexican burrito until I stumbled upon La Esquina's delivery menu. At $3 each, the prices are reasonable, the spices are very well executed, and both the pulled and roasted chicken are perfect. Yummy!

    The place to be

After waiting two months to get a table I finally gave in and had dinner at 11:30pm.  The food is good and the portions generous and the price is surprisingly reasonable for a hotter than life restaurant in the city.  Good music and cool scenery, looks like an underground church. Although go here to see and be seen, don't go if you're craving some authentic Mexican cooking.

Black beans and Pork tacos - YUMM!

I love getting black beans at Mexican places. Usually, I judge places based on their beans. This place has great black beans. They have a side dish I haven't seen outside Texas (moros and christianos - rice and black beans) - their's is excellent. I also got a shredded pork taco. It was fantastic! The pork was made like puerco pibil (most notable in Robert Rodriquez' film - Once upon a time in Mexico). Very yummy, just enough heat, just enough cabbage - in the taco. Corn tortillas for the tacos - very Texas. I wouldn't call this place Tex-Mex, because well... I dunno... possibly not enough heat and smoke flavors (though the open windows and not-paying-attention people blowing smoke into the place gives a smokey feeling). I would say this is Mexican food as made by Mexicans living in Texas who moved to NYC. Good stuff! As close as I will get to home-styled cookin' as I am going to get for a long while.

    Place to Be

Ive been to La Esquina a bunch of times and loooveee their tacos. I went to eat at the downstairs once and the place was done beautifully. La Esquina is a place that will be an icon of the neighborhood.

    Trendy, but not so much...

The space that is now La Esquina used to be a somewhat sketchy 24-hour lunch counter, which was notable for making some of the best cheesesteaks in the city, despite being somewhat... sketchy. And now it's yet another nouveau Mexican joint, in a neighborhood that wasn't really lacking them in the first place, and that's cool, but the food's pretty average and I miss the old cheesesteaks. I feel like it says something about downtown NYC, too, though I'm not quite sure what.
