yumm-o
the service and atmosphere of this restaurant is amazing... and the fondu is D-licious (with a capital 'D'). Drinking wine out of a baby bottle brings me back to my infant days-(except replace wine with.. well you know).

Great casual fun place!
Had a great casual dinner here! The fondue is $21 a person. Not exactly cheap but not very expensive either. If you go as a couple you should get one cheese fondue and one meat and then you can have both experiences. Loved it!

what could be bad about fondue?
We went to La Cave de Fondue Saturday night for a late dinner. It is steps below 24 Prince. It does have a cave like effect but the table are long and family style for about 16 people each. You can live with that but you will be talking to your neighbors. What I didn't quite understand is why they sat us at one end when the rest of the table was virtually empty and as people come in ask us to slide down when the rest of the place was packed. Why didn't they just ask us to slide down first? I looked around and no one seemed to have food. The menu is basically fondue, not much choice or difficulty preparing, and they serve wine in baby bottles, a little weird but I've heard of that before and after waiting so long we didn't care as long as there was alcohol involved. The waiter insists we need to order 2 fondues, but we have an appetizer and its late so I say one is enough. He gives me a dirty look. Your wait is determined by how long you are there because they bring most of it out at once like a rennaisance fair. The couple on our right waited 45 minutes and people at the other end 15 minutes. They bring out french bread cut up in chunks and jambon(processed ham in little rolls) but that comes in handy because after about 40 minutes you can make mini ham sanwiches because you are starving, it is about 10:30 pm at this point. They bring out little burners with sterno but they might forget to give you one as out waiter did. Then the food arrives en mass. Unfortunately our cheese fondue is only lukewarm. I asked the waiter could he please have it heated up, he then proceeds to argue that the sterno will heat it up, the sterno is the size of a candle. His arrogance and rudeness rolls off me because i did not wait all this time to be dismissed by a young French waiter with no manners. He begrudgedly removes it and the couple on our right are kind enough to let us have some of their fondue. They were foreigners visiting NY and we were happy to recommend places to them in return for some cheese. I would never go there again, but if you have a large crowd and don't care how long you wait and have bad service then this is your place!
