Not recommended
As a new UWS, my BF and I were searching for a new sushi spot, as we are sushi freaks! After some serious web research we chose to order from Kouzan as all the reviews were AH-MAZING! Well my question is, do the people on all sites not know good sushi...BC that is unfortunate! I am so perplexed by the 4 star reviews, because this experience may go down as the most disappointing EVER! The fish was mushy, as well has having thick cuts too difficult to chew. And not to mention the salad dressing being a sugary bowl of miso (no ginger in sight), and the soup a broth with random cut up vegetables.

Simply the BEST
Im an UWS native and a sushi lover. Nothing compares to this place if you love fresh fish! I eat here once a week and I am yet to have a single bad piece of fish. Absolutely delish. My new favorite restaurant.

Consistency and balance issues
I've ordered a few times from here, and each time the sushi rolls are off somehow. The rice is hard, the rolls are falling apart, or the balance of the flavors are off--like the spicy tuna is too saucy or the ingredients aren't in the proper proportions to be in harmony with each other. I feel there are better options in the neighborhood.

Consistently Delicious
I've been here many times, from when it used to be Yuki a block away, and in the new location. I consider it the best Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood and I have tried them all except for a few of the newer (and much more expensive places.) I've never had anything that wasn't first rate. The sushi is always excellent, the salads crisp and fresh, and the various dishes all good. Service is unfailingly polite and fully competent or better. I have to believe that the few totally negative reviews were posted by local competitors who are usually empty when Kouzan is full.

The best on the UWS
Been to Kouzan many many times over the past two years. The staff is hospitable, background music always very pleasant, and above all...the food is fantastic! Great spicy tuna, sushi cuts, and specialty rolls. Works for date night or with the family. On the top of my UWS go-to list.

Pretentious and incompetent
A glaring exception to the usual competence of most NYC Japanese restaurants. Absurdly understaffed, they simply CAN'T HANDLE a full restaurant. Waiter forgot our drinks. Among the record long waits to obtain a check, even after we told them that we had to leave right away! Food was substandard, with smallish portions and overly sweet sauces on cooked dishes. Unless you want an unsatisfying and frustrating dining experience stay away.

Best Sushi I've had. The service is always very friendly and speedy. Very nice atmosphere. Great place!
