Friendly atmosphere and great service
My sister lives nearby and had always wanted to try Kouzan. She now has a favorite in the neighborhood. I loved the "jumbo sushi" and it was a very good value for two at $23.50

Excellent Food & Extremely Pleasant, Professionally Run Restaurant.
I eaten in just about every Japanese restaurant on the upper west side and also in some of the famous places like Hatsuhana. (I'm just as happy to be in Kouzan as in Hatsuhana.) As far as west side restaurants there is no comparison. Unfailingly delicious sushi and hot dishes, VERY fresh salad, and a large and unusual selection of sake and beer along with a full bar. I've always gotten great, fast, and polite service. The room is more pleasant than most Japanese restaurants on the west side, and the music (usually a good selection of jazz recordings) is at the perfect level, never too loud. When I bring my Japanese friends here they say the only place they get better sushi is in Japan. And by the way, the prices are very reasonable.

Underrated
Never had a disappointing meal at this place. Food is always fresh and tastes great. I have been ordering/going here for several years, and always return as it has some of the best food of its type around. This place is great!

Great sushi and great value
I have frequented Kouzan regularly since it opened and am always pleased with the quality of the sushi and the pleasant atmosphere and good service. The roll combinations are interesting and a good value. I highly recommend it.

Bad
I very much agree with Pizzabagel and zanna; the sushi was bad. Mushy, tasted old. So many Upper West Siders have no taste and can't tell the difference between awesome, decent, and poor sushi. It's pathetic that people will pay restaurant prices so indiscriminately. If you cant tell the difference, why are you paying $20 for it?

Fantastic Sushi
Kouzan is a delightful restaurant to go to with family or friends. Great Food, great service...Kouzan is truly terrific. Whenever my son returns home from college, it's the one restaurant that we always go to.

The most disappointing sushi ever
I just received my delivery. The pepper tuna is average, the sushi is old and has an unappetizing taste. I had to throw it away. The tempura isn't that bad (for sure is not good) but I'm so disappointed by the sushi that I cannot eat anything!
