Don't be the last reservation
My boyfriend took me to this restaurant two weeks ago for the tasting menu. Cute place, feels like you are in a little house in the mountains or something. Walking in and finding it completely empty I specifically asked if it was too late to be seated for dinner. There was NO ONE in the restaurant save two ladies sitting at the bar who appeared to know everyone there. I suspected they were either owners or friends of someone that worked there. They left shortly after we were seated. We were told that we were not too late and were taken to a table by a very nice waiter. He really could not have been nicer and was extremely informative as he brought each dish. He later emptied the bathroom trash about four feet from our table while we finished our dessert. So I don't know, I guess that is considered bad service, right? The courses started out strong and tasty and lost it as the night wore on. We had crunchy smoked chicken risotto, an obvious sign that the chef was rushing through preparation. I have put just about everything you can think of in a risotto at some point and it needed another two cups of chicken stock and another ten minutes or so. Our fish was a bit tough, not really sure what happened there. Nothing really to write home about all in all. Our biggest gripe was that just because we both work late and often have to take the last reservation of the evening doesn't mean that we want to be part of the clean up portion of the evening. The chef actually jogged out of the restaurant while we were finishing our dessert and nodded a little in our direction as he flew out the door. Hot date, I guess. We would have had no problem ordering pizza and saving Knife and Fork for another night when we could get there 45 minutes earlier. I wondered later if the two ladies at the bar were in fact owners and that nice waiter and chef would have told us to take a hike had they not been there? I wish that they had because not only we will never go back, we will never let our friends go either.

Good food, but wait!
Went there for the tasting menu with my girlfriend recently. It was alright, but overall much less impressive than I expected. Perhaps I'm just used to higher quality tasting menus. Let me say that the food was generally good. However, there were aspects of the presentation and service which just struck me as amateurish and silly. I'll just list the two which stuck out most prominently. The first couple of dishes coming out were all covered in chervil. I thought that maybe it was just a coincidence. However, the more dishes that came, the more chervil we got. Did they have a surplus that they needed to offload onto us? Out of our 6 dishes, 4 of them were covered in chervil. There was no difference in the presentation of it, just a dish of whatever and then covered in chervil. To me, it's like serving a giant lemon wedge with every dish. I have nothing against chervil, but why put it on top of 2/3 of the dishes? Gladly, the dessert wasn't one of them. However, the dessert was another problem I had. We were both served in the same small dishes, but filled with glaringly different amounts. A serving isn't exceptionally large to begin with, so you might think that consistency might be easy. However, they sure didn't manage that. The levels were visibly off. I wasn't much in the mood for the dessert anyway, so I didn't make a comment, but I'm not sure how you can serve two people at a table a course of a tasting menu and have the quantity of food be visibly different. I'd suggest not getting the tasting menu and just ordering an appetizer+entree. It might cost just a little more (or the same depending on what you get), but you'll be saved from the silliness of an unorganized tasting menu. Since I didn't have a complaint about the food itself, I'd recommend going here if you want to try it for that reason alone.

secret gem
Knife and Fork is one of my best NYC finds in years. The $45 six course tasting menu is possibly the best value in the city. The food is all fresh and high quality. They don't cheap out on the tasing menu either. I have ordered it twice and both times was served three fish dishes, fois gras, a meat dish, and two deserts. They also have an extensive wine list and the restauant is small and intimate. The service is a little spotty, but the food is well worth it.

food and service were disappointing
went here as a group and used opentable to make a reservation. got a call two hours before we were to arrive for dinner letting me know that the restaurant has a policy for groups 6 and over that they have to have the tasting menu! too late to change our plans of course. but then we thought maybe the tasting menu would be great anyway. big let-down. the food was bland, and the presentation was just ok. definitely not a "tasting menu" in the foodie sense of the word. Also, there were only two servers in the whole place, so it took hours for the 6 courses to come through, and they would have only one person serve the table when the courses were ready, so by the time the 8th person got his plate the first had already finished!

Not worth it
We went to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday. The place was a BIG disappointment. The tasting menu was beautifully presented but the taste did not match what was served. The chef needs to taste his food before he serves it - it lacked seasoning and originality. Also, the portions for a 6 course were odd-there was no distinction between portion of a appetizer vs. a main. I wish I had chosen another restaurant to celebrate. Will never go back and recommend that you don't either.

I ate here with my sister recently. We started at the bar with a few drinks and ordered a small sampling. The wine was good and the food was very good, so we decided to stay for dinner. It was a mistake. The tasting menu was very disappointing. Each dish looked interesting, but the food was bland and uninspiring. The waiters were a tad annoying, which didn't help. They would put the food in front of you and speed through the description, leaving you to wonder what you are exacting eating. They threw the desserts down, and we didn't have a clue what they were. The atmosphere was nice. The regular menu food looked much better than the tasting. We spent about $100 each, and we left still hungry.

Recommended But With a Few "Reservations"
We really did enjoy our evening and relished the idea of a tasting menu for $45. We added on the wine tasting for an add'l $40 each. The food was beautifully prepared, but we can see where other viewers felt that the ingredients could have been of a more premium quality and why there are concerns about the service. Sadly, the staff is over taxed and that is reflected in the pace of your meal. Our key issue? We were in and out in forty five minutes with a six course tasting menu for $85 each. We've had meals in our local diner that were more leisurely. If applying a total cost to time spent, our value was less than fair and that's the problem for us. Would we go again? Yes, but only if we were clear up front that we had the evening to enjoy a quiet and adequately meal. Unless you are going out for breakfast at the diner, who wants to be be back out on the street less than an hour after walking in?
