Morphed to Magnificent
I had a wonderful meal @ Kitchenette this Sunday. I woke up and told my fiancé I wanted grits and turkey sausage - and he took me to Kitchenette for the first time. We were seated in the time indicated to us. We did have a wait for our food which was out of the customary. In addition, my eggs came out over easy and I am a hard-line over well kinda gal. The manager, Doug, was kind enough to come over personally. I told him I was very unhappy about the wait and that my order was incorrect. He did not debate, but rather took my plate and told me he'd be right back. He returned with everything in good order and piping hot. Excellent! Doug also stated that he'd take care of me (b/c he didn't want any unhappy customers) and did just that.....I received my morning mimosa on the house and 2 delicious cupcakes to enjoy. It was the best experience I've ever had in such a situation. I will surely return and bring along friends. This is a great place for a delicious meal. It's not a glamorous atmosphere, but it's down home.....and for those who care more about their bellies than the decor, go and enjoy!

Best Turkey Meatloaf.
Went here last night with my boyfriend for dinner and was literally blown away by the turkey meatloaf. I got the price fix dinner for $16.50 which consisted of a green salad- pretty basic. Meatloaf with mashed potatos and gravy and a chocolate cupcake. Delish! Really really good. My BF got the burger with onions and mushrooms and he loved it. It came on a toasted challa roll, which was a nice crispy yet soft addition. We also took home a little banana cream pie which we shared and it was really very good as well. I would go back and I would recommend it to everyone. I was really shocked to read the reviews here- service was proffessional and with a smile. No complaints. You want good home cooked comfort food? Go here.

Pink and polka dots
Me and my husband brought our kids to New York City for the beginning of their summer vacation. We had heard from a friend of ours that Kitchenette Uptown was "family friendly" and decided to give it a try. I have to agree that this cute little restaurant is the perfect place for a family meal! Its vintage decor, consisting of numerous polka dots and splashes of pink color, is definitely a cheery atmosphere. The food is a little expensive, but the portions are fair, and the desserts are to die for! Even better than the friendly atmosphere, is the friendly waiters and waitresses. The place was packed this morning; nevertheless, our waitress was quite attentive, and several other employees greeted us and attended to our needs. Overall, I am very glad that we chose Kitchenette. We will certainly return the next time we are in town.

How DO they do it?
Everything I've ordered here, from the turkey meatloaf to the blueberry pancakes, not only tastes yummy but like it wasn't made in a restaurant - like it was made for you in someone's kitchen, so I guess Kitchenette is an appropriate name! Usually when the friendly server says 'everything's good' you know they're full of it - not so here :) Prices are slightly higher then average but the portion sizes are MUCH higher than average and you often get a choice of a side or 2. Don't get me started on the bakery case - they make everything fresh on-site and really tests my willpower when I walk by it - probably not a good thing if like me you are trying to watch your waistline. A lot has been mentioned about the brunch wait times and cramped quarters but I've rarely had to wait more than 20 minutes and even at those busy times there's usually a few open seats at the counter for the truly ravenous. Uptown diners also tend to be more courteous about scooting about - if this place was in midtown I'm sure I would be getting bopped upside the head with the overflowing shopping bags of tourists but thankfully it hasn't happened yet! A great neighborhood find!

Dissappointing Dinner
Brunch here has always been awesome. Unfortunately, last night I went for dinner for the first and last time. We shared the poblano pepper quesedillas which were good, but unexpectedly spicy hot for the description. I got the crab cake sandwich, which consisted of the smallest crab cake I've ever had sandwiched between two HUGE pieces of white bread, the tartar sauce was missing, and they put bacon on it after I asked that it be left out. It came with the worst tasting cole slaw I've ever had, and "baked" garlic fries, which were only halfway cooked and not very appetizing. Seriously, how do you mess up french fries?? The service was shoddy, I had to get up to ask for more water and the check. I regret going here for dinner.

Down the tubes
I used to really enjoy coming to this place for great food but my fiance and I went last night and were utterly disappointed and a little angry. We went early in the day for dinner and the restaurant was empty save for two tables of two. We thought that would at least mean good service. I was in the mood for a crabcake, so I ordered that and we split the fried chicken, macaroni and mashed potatoes. The crabcake was delicious, but at 9.00 for *one* the size a thick silver dollar, I felt duped. The fried chicken was good, but there are better across the park in Harlem. No need to say anything about the macaroni other than it is the one thing they do exceptionally well. The thing that bothered us was the waitress and server were never around. The server thought it was ok to wear an ipod while bringing us our food even though they have a penchant for messing up orders here. We had to flail wildly to tell him he got the wrong thing for us. Finally we ordered what the menu called peanut butter pie. I remember years ago when this placed opened they used to do it well, like my mom used to make and it used to be in a slice. Strangely, we got a small 5 inch diameter mini pie. As a baker myself, I immediately said 'uh-oh' because mini pies *cannot* be as good as a real pie due to the cooking process. The pie had no filling almost and every bite was almost entirely graham cracker crust: a far cry from what a creamy, silky peanut butter pie should be. Somehow, this meal came out to 45 dollars with no drinks except water. I felt cheated for what I paid. Until this place picks up the slack with their baking and waitstaff, I won't go back. Now if I could only get my 50 bucks back...

Cute place, ok cakes, but the service?
I've always enjoyed going to Kitchenette for brunch and their desserts. Tonight, we were greatly disappointed by the food and service. The chocolate cupcakes were super dry and tasted like they were days old. Also, we were sitting at the counter and thought we were being courteous to the waitstaff. As we were paying, one of us said in jest, "Do you have a cab light?" Most of us didn't get his question (it's a light you switch on on the side of a bdg to get a cab). The waitress/cashier impatiently made a snappy comment and said he was annoying her and he needed to stop (and not in jest either). We were PAYING HER at the time, and he had just given her a $5.00 tip before she made that comment. As far as I know, you are never supposed to say that to paying customer, even if he was being a jerk (for the record: he wasn't, but his humor was lost on her). Definitely NOT worth the price and the service!! They need to re-train their staff (or at least her). In the meantime, I'll get my sugar fix elsewhere (Max Soha has good tiramisu)
