will have to try again
went there for the lunch deal. About $25, had the grilled calamari, was extremely good, then the crab cake which was not good at all, but by that time I was so full that I couldn't even eat the dessert. Looking at the menu I wouldn't want to try it for dinner, but I should give this restaurant another try for lunch but with a different main course, probably fish of the day.

wow lobster
wow. celebrated Mom's 79th birthday here May 17 and everyone found something at this wonderful elegant restaurant with great affordable options to love - my elderly parents, my foodie husband, and my 20 something daughters. Everyone couldn't wait to come back and do it all over again. My daughter wanted to run right back with her friends to the bar where you could make a meal of the free eats. The two prix-fixe options (a regular menu and a Sunday lobster special) were simply the best food for the money we've ever had anywhere. The champagne steamed lobster was among the five best entrees I've had in my life. Atmosphere is welcoming and convivial (there was a big fat Greek engagement party in process in the back) but perhaps because of fortunate acoustics it was NOT too noisy for us. The waitstaff is knowledgable, helpful, trustworthy and professional. Its not perfect, but only God is perfect, and if it was more perfect than it is, we probably couldn't afford it. Some tepid reviews on this site suggest that if you order off the regular menu, where the prices are quite high, rather than the prix fixe, you might be disappointed, so stick with the prix fixe and I know you couldn't possibly be disappointed.

VERY disappointing
I had high expectations for Kellari Taverna based on recommendations from a Greek colleague. Having spent time in Greece I can honestly say I am familiar with good Greek food and of course Greek hospitality. This was very disappointing. I had the highly acclaimed "yesterday's lamb" and it was terrible. There was a generous portion-4 peices, 2 of which were inedible. One was dry and overcooked, the other was pure fat. The entire dish was oversalted. For $30 I shouldnt have been served a chunk of gristle and fat. I have no problem paying a lot of money for excellent food but this was a disgrace. My friend had the moussaka which was actually excellent, as it should be for $22. If I go again, and thats a big IF, I will get fish or a selection of mezedes. The service was very good, our waiter hovered a bit and the maitre'd came across as uppity.

unfathomable
coming from a greek background, i was excited to find a greek restaurant prior to going to a show in the theatre district, and that statement, was the extent of my satisfaction while dining at kellari taverna. over-priced is an understatement. i do not have a problem paying top-dollar for at least decent food, but this was subpar. it wasn't even close to a depiction of quality greek food. lame is a great word to describe the presentation and flavors in the food. i eat out 3 times a week and would not even consider a return trip, and i always give a restaurant a second chance, but this place could never provide a good meal, and it was evident on my first visit. atleast the service was ok. had lithrini, which is my favorite fish as my mother cooked it when i was young, and it is a traditional food to us greeks. it was subpar and tasteless, something my 12 year old son could cook the same. at $34 per pound, i expected something good. ateast it was fresh.

Fabulous!
This restaurant is the best in town. Definitely worth your money and time. The friendly service, food and atmosphere makes Kellari Taverna a perfect venue to bring friends and family members. Kellari Taverna never disappoints. The pre-theatre menu is fantastic and definitely a "must" try. I can't express how much I have enjoyed eating at Kellari Taverna...I can't wait to go back..give me any excuse and I am there!

Great spot for a leisurely experience
We started at the front "community" table for wine and cheese/olives, got plenty of attention, and were offered an on-time table seating (though we declined because we were enjoying ourselves there - got another seating 45 minutes later). We ordered a table full of appetizers, and the food was plentiful and good (not spectacular, but some plates were inventive). The atmosphere here really is fun, warm, and attractive. We experienced great service. As for the no-bags policy - I have to appreciate that because not everyone is courteous enough to really tuck away their belongings there would be little spare room for customers and servers to move around safely.
