    Needs to get over itself

We held a group birthday dinner for 13 at Kefi recently and I must agree with the previous reviewers: good food and very poor service. Water not refilled, orders forgotten, lazy attitude etc. But the overall feeling is that Kefi suffers from an inflated ego. It has a ridiculous rule that a large group must select 6 items (out of 9) on the menu and order only these items. It charges an outrageous 22% gratuity for poor service. And its cake fee is $4 per person, which is equally outrageous. Nobody enjoys being ripped off - Kefi needs to get over itself and quickly.

great food good value, don't expect service

The food here is great-- really, really good-- and also quite reasonably priced. And because of that it's MOBBED all the time. And the restaurant tends to be loud, busy, and the waitstaff very harried. I just moved up here from the West Village, and if this restaurant were downtown, it wouldn't be so crazy in there, but this place is really an oasis on the UWS-- due to the great/reasonable combo. The food does come out of the kitchen quick, which is nice, but the waitstaff and hostesses can be slow-ish, harried, and not always friendly. Also there are a couple of tables that are in the middle of waitstaff traffic and if you get one of those it feels like you're eating in Grand Central. Still, all worth it. Great take-out, and a nice place to go out if you don't want quiet and don't end up at the Grand Central tables.

Poor service can ruin a good meal

I'm sorry to say that while the food at the new Kefi is as good as expected, the service we received the particular night we dined there makes me very hesitant to go back. We had a reservation for the typically hot hour of Saturday night at 9 PM - a time most places are jammed, and the staff is just trying to get through the service. While I would rather avoid an hour like this, it's also as good a time as there is to judge a place. The service our party of two encountered was neither calm and controlled, nor overzealous and stressed. Rather, I can honestly say the service we got was as close to apathy as any dining experience I've had in the city. Our waitress simply didn't exhibit anything other than totally minimal effort - an attitude we interpreted as being seen as a guaranteed check and guaranteed tip, and as a result required no professionalism on her part. It's sad to be on the receiving end of this type of attitude, especially during a time when diners are pickier about where we go out, restaurants are eager for business, and most are happy to provide thoughtful, caring service that will draw diners back - even places once perceived as snotty. Apathy and carelessness were certainly not what we expected at Kefi. Spicifically, our server never indicated that she was new to the restaurant, or to serving in general. Had she done so, we obviously would have taken that into consideration. When we posed questions about certain dishes, she was unable to explain what ingredients were in several of them, and how the dishes were composed. Her obvious lack of knowledge about the food was never prefaced with any kind of explanation, nor were we offered any form of apologetic effort to answer our basic questions (multiple obscure allergies and dislikes, this was not); additional staff was never consulted for guidance. Our drinks arrived after our appetizer. A hamburger ordered well arrived rare, but then took about 15 minutes to be replaced, as other food on the table got cold. Minimal apologies were offered, and check-in's to see if we needed anything were nonexistent. While this list of complaints may seem minor, the overall attitude we received from our server was not welcoming, inclusive or eager to please - rather, it was careless and slightly stand-offish, and resulted in my leaving the smallest tip I think I've ever left.

    a lovely dinner

My husband and I stopped here for a quick dinner during our anniversary weekend before going to the theater on a Saturday evening. We ate on the early side (since we had a curtain to make) so it wasn't crowded, but by the time we left the restaurant, there was a line outside - it's definitely a popular spot. We asked for a quiet table and were given one. Our waiter was sweet and helpful and when we told him we were in a little bit of a rush he accomodated our timeframe nicely. He recommended drinks and vegetarian dishes for us. Everything was fresh and delicious. We had 2 appetizers -the cod and the fingerling potatoes - and two main dishes -the mac and cheese and the chickpea sandwich. Unfortunately, we did not have time to try the desserts (but, fortunately, our appetites were satisfied anyway). It was a very pleasant experience and reasonably priced to boot. We will visit Kefi again!

    New location, poor service

Since they've moved to the new location on Columbus, the service is insanely rushed and just plain subpar. Food quality has definitely gone done. Expansion was not a good thing for Kefi...

    What a place!

I had a dinner at Kefi the other night and it was GREAT. Amazing food at a cheap price; try the Octopus, Sausages, Branzino, Lamb chops or Dumplings. They are all to die for. Its very rare that you see such beautiful high quality food presented at such a low price. I'll go back as soon as i can!
