They need another month to get it right

This Greek restaurant had been elsewhere on the UWS and is now much larger and on Columbus and 84th. I had never been to the old version, just the new one tonight. It was not a good night. First of all, the restaurant is large, but they have too many tables and it feels very cramped for a large space. They could give more room to each table and then they may handle the amount of meals at one time better since there would be fewer tables. We had a 9pm reservation. The bar was packed and hard to move past. The 'check in' station was on the 2nd level, and the stairs leading up to the hostess was crammed with people waiting, and waiters trying to pass by and knocking into everyone. It was very uncomfortable. We were not seated for 1/2 hour past our reservation. I think they may have overbooked. Not sure what the problem was. They first seated us by the front door, and there are no curtains to block the cold air, so we moved to another table that was just vacated. Got our menus right away. We ordered at about 9:40. (Prices are reasonable) The got our wine right away. Waiter came by around 10:10 and told us there was no electricity in the kitchen and the appetizers were delayed. It sounded like a lie. But who knows. Finally our appetizers came out at 10:25. My meatballs were cold. The octopus was lukewarm, I told the waiter to take away my meatballs and I did not want anything in place of. We were told that the main course was on its way. Nope. So, another 15 minutes entree was served. My steak was not hot. It as warm/luke warm. I was starving. I ate it. It was very good. Would have been great if it were hot. About 1/2 way thru eating my steak the room became smokey. They opened one of the big windows onto the street. A blast of cold air came in, and all the tables around us put on their coats. I could not get out of there fast enough. They took off our bill the second glass of wine, took off the meatballs, and offered us dessert on the house. But we were too cold. So, we paid and left. Was not the waiter's fault. He was very nice. They need to get their act together. The manager should have come over instead of having the waiter be the 'bad guy'. I'd go back in a few months (spring time) on a weekday and see if they finally got it together. It's a shame, since I know others will love it there, and we just happened to be the unlucky ones who had a very bad first experience. Such is life.

    yummy

the food here is really really good and totally not overpriced (entrees around 13). the greek salad is awesome and the spreads are good and the moussaka hot and gooey. service is super fast. only complaint is that it feels a little cramped (but they're moving to a new space soon)

    Absolutely amazing...no joke

I went to Kefi last night with my family, I've been meaning to check this place out as I've only heard good things and live up the street on 79th. We went on a wednesday night so we didn't have to wait that long, but were promptly seated at a table that wasn't in the best location. Regardless, the waiter knew everything about the menu and was very helpful. First thing to note about this place is it's all cash, but that doesn't really matter as the prices are extremely reasonable, similar to Celeste. We had 3 apps, 4 entrees, and 3 drinks and it came out to $100. The food was amazing, highly recommend the meatball app and the lamb chops. Also the greek salad was fantastic. Will definitely be back, amazing gem in the UWS. Highly recommend.

    get out fast

food very good...reasonable prices...cramped...they want you out fast...brought entrees before we were finished with appetizers...two entree plates were removed before the third person had finished their entree...while having coffee and tea we were told to finish up because people were waiting for our table...don't plan on a relaxed time at dinner...won't go back

    A hidden gem in UWS

For the value, this place is unbeatable. The ambience is very nautical, but rustic. The food is delicious. I recommend the rabbit flat pasta, meatballs, the spreads, and the branzino were most excellent. We were a party of 4, for 3 mezes and 4 entrees, the total was about $30 a person. Will definitely be frequenting this restaurant a lot more.

    Great surprise

My girlfriend and I were wandering around trying to find a place to eat and we happened to stumble into this restaurant last night. We will definitely be coming back. The food was delicious and the service was polite and prompt. Yes, the space is crowded and it can be noisy, but I actually enjoyed the atmosphere. It certainly isn't a reason to avoid the restaurant. As for the food, we ordered 5 different mezes, and this was more than enough. I was surprised how large the portions were for the mezes. Finally, our waiter was great. He paid attention to us the entire time and was constantly refilling our water glasses when they were low. Excellent service and great food. Definitely worth your time and money.
