Great food but make a reservation...

I never went to the old location - the new location is spacious, but if you don't have a reservation you get seated in the front portion, which is near the bar, a bit crowded and loud. Otherwise, the food is definitely tasty - try the meatballs as an appetizer (not overrated).

    Smoke To Go

Someone should tell the owners to fix the ventilation problem. Was hoping to finally have a really great Greek restaurant in the neighborhood. Well...it's Greek, but it's not great. Not sure if it will ever be great, but it's okay. Everything was mostly just okay. Service was very slow on a busy night, but they tried. Oh, and they only seat complete parties, so everyone better come on time! Please get some more spoons. Telling a customer you're running low on utensils is ridiculous. If I ever go back again, I will pack my own utensils just in case they are short. I tried the branzino. Sad to know I can make it better at home. I wish them good luck. The location might be a jinx. Mod...Loft...Kefi?

    Fume-flavored Food

Good food still tastes bad when you're eating smoke. Service was spotty though friendly enough, and while some of the dishes we ordered (as a party of 4) seemed decent, it's all a bit hard to say when we were inhaling fumes the whole evening. Apparently the kitchen hasn't quite fixed its ventilation problem, so the wait staff says. It's only been 3 weeks in this newly expanded venue, and they're still working out the kinks. But who can care about the food when the clients are slowly dying of asphyxiation? We would have ordered dessert but had to hightail it out of there to save ourselves from developing some sort of pulmonary condition from all that smoke. It's so bad, can't believe that the problem isn't posing some sort of public health violation. Seriously.

    Mediocre

After having spent a month on the Greek island of Paros, we were excited about Kefi. Much to our disappointment, the food was mediocre and not authentic Greek style. Our two, very short, octopus legs were the taste and texture of a hot dog. The Greek salad was more like coleslaw. We felt rushed as everything was served at once. Forget the ambiance. There was none. The Greek Kitchen is a much better value.

    reasonable food, subpar service

Made a reservation for 5 for a friend's birthday, which they were more than happy to promise to accomadate. Got there on time, and it took more than 10 minutes to even speak to the maitre d. Then they kept us waiting for another 20 minutes before declaring they wouldn't seat us until all members of the party were there (two were stuck in traffic). After an argument with the Maitre d I was about to walk out when the rest of our party arrived, and I decided to let it go. Food was good, though dinner was rushed and main courses showed up 5 min after apetizers. Waiting staff was overall friendly and helpful. Given the rudeness of the maitre d and management, and their focus on moving people through as fast as possible without even honoring their reservations,I would not recommend this place or go back.

    Our Neighborhood Favorite

We've been going to Kefi for a couple of years now and were happy to hear a couple of months ago that they would be moving to a large venue, would began accepting credit cards and reservations and above all, that they would be keeping their prices the same. The food is excellent, we've never had a bad experience and we usually go about once a month and have recommended it to countless friends and family who have had the same positive experiences. The waitstaff really know the menu and wine list and are always very helpful and accommodating. We made a reservation for Friday, December 12th at 8pm, the same evening as the previous reviewer and had an excellent meal but completely understand the complaints about the crowd- it was the first Friday night they were open and they had a huge turnout which is wonderful but more than they could accommodate. We arrived on time and were seated immediately. There did seem to be an electrical problem and smoke coming from the kitchen which was unfortunate since there seemed to be some first time diners there. We have never had an experience quite like that before. I agree that they should have done more to accommodate the diners whose meals were delayed significantly. I really encourage everyone to give it another try. The food is excellent and the prices extremely reasonable considering especially the quality of the food.

They need another month to get it right

This Greek restaurant had been elsewhere on the UWS and is now much larger and on Columbus and 84th. I had never been to the old version, just the new one tonight. It was not a good night. First of all, the restaurant is large, but they have too many tables and it feels very cramped for a large space. They could give more room to each table and then they may handle the amount of meals at one time better since there would be fewer tables. We had a 9pm reservation. The bar was packed and hard to move past. The 'check in' station was on the 2nd level, and the stairs leading up to the hostess was crammed with people waiting, and waiters trying to pass by and knocking into everyone. It was very uncomfortable. We were not seated for 1/2 hour past our reservation. I think they may have overbooked. Not sure what the problem was. They first seated us by the front door, and there are no curtains to block the cold air, so we moved to another table that was just vacated. Got our menus right away. We ordered at about 9:40. (Prices are reasonable) The got our wine right away. Waiter came by around 10:10 and told us there was no electricity in the kitchen and the appetizers were delayed. It sounded like a lie. But who knows. Finally our appetizers came out at 10:25. My meatballs were cold. The octopus was lukewarm, I told the waiter to take away my meatballs and I did not want anything in place of. We were told that the main course was on its way. Nope. So, another 15 minutes entree was served. My steak was not hot. It as warm/luke warm. I was starving. I ate it. It was very good. Would have been great if it were hot. About 1/2 way thru eating my steak the room became smokey. They opened one of the big windows onto the street. A blast of cold air came in, and all the tables around us put on their coats. I could not get out of there fast enough. They took off our bill the second glass of wine, took off the meatballs, and offered us dessert on the house. But we were too cold. So, we paid and left. Was not the waiter's fault. He was very nice. They need to get their act together. The manager should have come over instead of having the waiter be the 'bad guy'. I'd go back in a few months (spring time) on a weekday and see if they finally got it together. It's a shame, since I know others will love it there, and we just happened to be the unlucky ones who had a very bad first experience. Such is life.
