Super fresh
Really amazingly fresh sushi and great value. My friend and I shared the $46 sushi dinner for 2 and we left completely full and enjoyed every bite. Highly recommended!

subpar sushi
I've been there once a year ago, the foods were much better at that time. The sushi we had last night was some of the most unappetizing sushi I ever had. You can tell the fish are not fresh by looking at their color. All of them are dull and without taste.

one of the 5 best omakase
the chef at kanoyama is one of the 20 best chefs on the planet. a 27 for food in zagat is barely scratching the surface. his omikase includes things that aren't on the menu. when i made my first trip here i got a tomato tofu that his servers had never even seen before. cost 600 bucks for 2 people if you want to do it right though. but no doubt, if your in new york city and enjoy the sushi scene and don't mind breaking the bank you will LOVE kanoyama.

Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Sushi Joint!
I am a West Village resident who was a longtime fan of both Taka and Kirara (both unfortunately now closed). Outside of uptown option Sushi of Gari, which is a bit too pricey for regular visits, I was having a hard time finding a sushi place that had the right combination of freshness, artful presentation, and some unusual choices instead of the same old tuna/salmon/yellowtail/california roll boredom. Well, I think in Kanoyama I have found a great new spot! Stopped in on a busy Thursday night and was blown away. For a very reasonable $31 (including soup or salad and ice cream), sat at the sushi bar and had the sushi omagase, which had eight pieces of killer sushi (including arctic char, mackeral and freshwater eel) and a toro roll. Only thing that was not top notch was the uni, which tasted a little off. As for complaints about the service, yes, it took a while for the food to come, but there were four sushi chefs working their fingers off the place was packed. I paid my bill (less than $50) with a credit card, so not sure what that complaint was about. If you are into super fresh, creative sushi - give Kanoyama a try. You will not be disapointed.

Won't take credit card orders under $80?
While the food is quite good, I was just told that they wouldn't take a credit card order for under $80 when I tried to get delivery. How insane is that?
