Good but over-priced and over-hyped, no more BYOB!

Went there today for Valentines, first let me say - No more BYOB! Doesn't that suck?! I had two appetizers (seaweed & Rib-eye). The seaweed salad was very original, you get 4 different kinds with dressing on the side. The Rib-eye was good but such a small amount, they charge $9.00 for 4 thin slices of Rib-Eye drenched in teriyaki sauce. Not worth it. Now for the sushi rolls, I had three. First the spicy salmon roll ($7.00), it was delicious the best roll I had, good value, good size and the salmon was so fresh I took my time eating every piece. The only roll of the night I felt was worth the money, should have had two! Next, I had the rain-bow roll ($12.00), it was not worth for the money. I regular a half-price sushi places that sells the same size rain-bow roll for $6.00. The freshness of the fish was lower on this one. Disappointing for the price. Finally I had an Eel avocado roll, it was priced at $8.00, again over-priced and the size and freshness was no better than the half-price place (my secret spot) I regular. So this was disappointing as well. The atmosphere is kinda dark, and a bit cramped. Also, I felt a chill all night long. Service was a bit slow but very good. I like the place but won't go back, because I feel the value of the food is lacking. In this day and age, unless you're loaded, it's not worth the price to come here more than once a year. Just my honest opinion.

    Great Place!

Been to this restaurant a couple of times and I must say it's always great! The food is prepared very nicely and the taste is phenomenal. I've always loved Japanese food and this place by far has some of the best tasting Japanese food that I've had. There are also items not listed on the menu and is available only at certain times. If you are lucky to go in on one of those days then definitely try the things that are not on the menu but you have to ask the wait staff as it really depends on how much stock they have. Very nice atmosphere for a people who re looking for a casual, relaxed, grown up feel. Definitely a place you can go as a group or on a date. Dishes I recommend: -Sukiyaki (the real kind) -Steak -Shabu shabu (The beef is amazing!) -Katsu Sandwich -Yuba Soba Salad I always get one of these when I go and trust me, you can't go wrong with this at all!

amongbest japanese i've had in manhattan

I grew up eating Japanese food in California, and have lived in Japan. Kamui is easily among the best I've had in NYC. Their udon, soba, and miso had no MSG or shellfish, the ginger was 'artisan', the rolls garnished, everything was unbelievably good- and a California picky eater is hard to impress.

    Great neighborhood japanese!

I've eaten at Kamui Den many times and am never disappointed. The quality of the food is excellent and very authentic. Plus the owner/chef is very attentive. The sushi and appetizers are always tasty, but the cooked dishes like sukiyaki and nabe are better in my opinion. Best part is that its still BYOB.

    Real Japanese Food!

I am a Japanese and if I am dining at a Japanese restaurant I only go to a place that is cooked by a Japanese chef and serves real Japanese food. Kamui Den's chef is a well known Japanese chef and everything he cooks is excellent. I recommend the roasted chicken with black sesame sauce and the beef tongue which you would not believe how sophiscated it tastes. Every single dish makes me feel I want to come back and dine here again. Overall bill is not that pricy which is also good. What is really good is that you can bring your own alchol. I am going to bring my sake and shochu tomorrow night as well which will make a cheap tab!! One of my friend really likes this place and she has already became a repeater. Good Food, Good Service, Good atmosphere, spacy (unlike the other crowded Japanese place) , Very Reasonable!! MUST TRY!!! Cannot go wrong.

    Amazing

This is definitely worth checking out. The one draw back is that they do not deliver. But you can take out which is good. Some also think the fact they dont have a liquor liscense is bad news, but I find it charming and unconventional as you are more than welcome to bring your own (which makes for a cheaper tab). But seriously, this is the best Japanese in the city. End of story.

    Innovative Japanese

This is a great neighborhood japanese restaraunt. The owner and waitresses are very attentive, and always make you feel at home, and the food is excellent Its a good place for groups because its usually not too crowded, and you can bring your own wine and beer. If you're in the mood to try out a bunch of different things, just order appetizers and rolls and share. Highly recommended!
