We had a great meal and great experience. For fans of Serbian cuisine, they will truly appreciate a great offering in NY! For those not familiar, it is a great introduction with top quality food in an informal, but intimate atmosphere. Look forward to our next visit and sending friends.

There is a lovely dreamy quality to this low-key candlelit restaurant. Maybe its typical Serbian, but to this American it felt like a trip to the past, like a restaurant near someone's summer home. Antique photos, mirrors, wood paneling shaping the ceiling like a hipped roof. Let your darling server recommend a Serbian wine. For appetizers, share the cabbage or beet salad, or the vegetable one with ham and mayo mixed in. There is a creamy cheese spread on earthy bread, a savory feta/phyllo pastry, and sometimes fried fish which is great with lemon. Main courses might remind you of Eastern European fare, smoked meats, grilled fish, a log-like but delicious ham and cheese schnitzel. The portions are decently sized. Our favorite dessert is the creamy grain pudding that we are sure our Serbian mother would have made for us often! Just a few more dollars than the diner and a world away.

This place has consistently been an excellent hang out spot of trendy Europeans (lots of Greeks, Serbs, you name it) looking for food in the East Village that not your typical greasy American stuff. There are MANY young people who just come in and hang out. Dishes are good, and I agree with the other reviews that they're authentic and taste like home cooking.

I went to Kafana few days ago and was surprised how good the food was, almost like when my mom makes it. the portions, however were very small comparing to the ones from serbia, but the atmoshere and food were def.worth going! Will be back!!

I ate at Kafana for the first time tonight. Their food is delicious, the decor is very pleasant as well. Great Service. Definitely check it out!

This place is the first of its kind- a true Serb food restaurant that's simple yet fantastic. The dishes are all excellent, no matter if you order meat (cevapi are a must) or pie (Gibanica). Note that "pie" in Serbian isn't like pot pie in the USA, but actually more like a phillo dough pita-type dish that's very hearty coupled with some yogurt. The combination of flavors is great at Kafana, and I hope they stick around. P.S. The place is pretty new and cash only (for now...).

We went here last night, party of 2. The food is absolutely fantastic. I have been to many other Balkan, Eastern European restaurants, throughout NYC including Astoria, this place is in a class of their own totally and completely. the food is better than it is even in the country itself. Highly recommend the Dimljena Vesalica. Cozy place, but tight quarters. Good service, but again the food is what it is all about. By far, the best restaurant for Balkan cuisine in NYC. Highly recommended. I'll be back for sure.
