Takes Me Back to India!
After visiting India (the Golden Triangle, Mumbai, Orcha, Khajuraho), I realized that the vast majority of Indian restaurants in NYC just don't quite get it right...too much heat, not enough subtlety in use of spices. Junoon was therefore a revelation...this is what I have been dreaming about for the years since my trip! Not one of our dishes disappointed: wonderful eggplant chaat and duck meatballs for appetizers, delicious lamb kolhapuri, baby eggplants, and simply outstanding crispy okra for mains. None of the dishes was overwhelmingly hot, and the spice combinations were perfect. My friend the oenophile was impressed by the wine list; she hesitated when the sommelier suggested a pinot to begin with but agreed upon tasting that it was perfect for the appetizers (he had consulted with our waiter, and knew what we were ordering). The room is beautiful, and our service was excellent all around. A complete keeper! One small complaint: charging extra for white rice is a little over the top, given the relatively high prices overall.

Simply Brilliant!
Brilliant food, brilliant service and a wonderful atmosphere! What else can you ask for. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in town. The menu is vast and full of variety. Can be a perfect setting for a romantic or group dining. We will definitely repeat!

Simply amazing
This is by far the best Indian restaurant in New York. The food is true to Indian taste yet refined in it's presentation. The service is attentive. The ambience is superb and gives a zen like feeling as if one is dining in a museum. Overall experience is really really good.

Nizam's food
Having lived in India as foodies for 25 yrs i can say that this is undoubtedly the BEST high-end Indian restaurant in the city. The food isn't loaded with spice... and the ingredients are fresh and aromatic. Been here at least half a dozen times and every time it's been excellent. It's not cheap, but worth every penny. This is real Mughlai stuff comparable to some high-end restaurants in London (even better than copper chimney or khyber in bombay). It is not comparable to the Tamarind types in NY, completely different league. One caveat: you need to know what to order so take a friend or the waiter's advice...

Elegant and refined
Beautiful dining room giving diners more than adequate personal space with excellent, thoughtful service. We went for restaurant week not expecting anything exciting. We were pleasantly surprised. The duck meatball appetizer had a subtle, refined sauce that was absolutely delicious. The shrimp appetizer was generous with the right amount of chili to offset the jicama and avocado. We both had the halibut (handi) which we thoroughly enjoyed after the server brought us some extra chili sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked. Kulfi was intensely flavored and delicious. We will be going back for another meal.

Not recommended
I would actually give this place negative stars if I could. The appetizer we got was the kakori kebab...all meat with too much cardamom and clove and no other flavors. This was followed by an even worse entree. The halibut was not fresh, yet we were told it was delivered that morning. The lamb kohlapuri had a very strong sauce with chewy, overcooked lamb that had tons of fat. The missi roti actually tasted like dough rolling around in your mouth. The best part of the meal was the amuse bouche and the chocolate at the end. The space was quite beautiful but go have a glass of wine, don't get the food.

Tamarind is far better
Upon entering you get the sense you are in for a special evening. Beautiful bar area then you are led into the main dining room and it does not disapoint visualy. Then the trouble started. Our waiter was expressionless and cold. He took our drink order then we waited and waited until the drinks finally arrived delivered by another stoic waiter. We then sat and waited and waited unitl I litteraly had to waive him over to take our order. The restaurant was busy but not even close to being full and there certainly was plenty of staff flying around. He made no attempt to explain the restaurant or any specials they may be offering. The table next to us was offered hot towels prior to eating we were not. Appetizers arrived and the Cauliflower was average and the Duck meatballs were excellant. That ended up being the highlight of the evening as the main entrees we ordered were certainly not Michelin quality and this place is definitely not better or in our opinion in the same class as Tamarind which is close by. I owe Tamarind an apology thinking they could actually be out done. Tamarind, you are greeted warmely and the food and service is always excellant. We had ordered additional drinks and one was never delivered and the other came halfway through our dinner. We refused to accept it and to thier credit they came back and offered it on the house. The value for the dollar spent is poor as they charge everything ala cart which is simply riduclous especially when you factor in what they charge for appetizers and entrees. They even served extra rice which we didn't order and charged us for that as well. So Junoon has made me appreciate Tamarind that much more than I did before. We did not order desert and they brought us a tiny small sample of deserts which again was a nice gesture but a miss. There were 3 of us and they brought 4 pieces. Really? So we are suppossed to cut one 3 ways? Attention to detail, being friendly and making it so you really feel relaxed and welcome was not a concern. None of us will EVER come back to this place. Too bad as we all love Indian cuisine and loved the idea that they cook using all 5 cooking methods. Huge disapointment.
