Great food
Total hole in the wall (though there are some tables), but the food is outstanding! I'd rather eat there than pricey Darbar two doors down. Staff is really nice, too.

Best Indian food in midtown
I've been going to this restaurant since it was located on 28th street and Lexington. Different location but same great food and now its specialty is take-out. This is the only restaurant that serves Indian food that I actually CRAVE at least once or twice a month. They are a great value ($9 for lunch platter) and I have NEVER ever felt sick after eating here. Can't say that about 95% of the Indian restaurants in Manhattan. Try it, you won't regret it!

Best Indian in NYC
Love this place, love the yellow dal, goat curry, mushroom curry, fish curry, biryani... it's all just yummy. And the people are so very nice! I live in Washington DC and make it a point to go to Joy every time I visit NYC. And I pack some food to go back with me to DC.

In 2 words - love it
I live in the area so I have not ordered during the midtown lunch rush (I see from the reviews many people are in the lunch crowd.) Either way, I can vouch for this restaurant as being an excellent choice. The food is very well prepared, the sauces are distinct, the price is a good deal (often a buck or 2 cheaper than nearby Indian establishments). Dishes I can highly recommend: Chicken or Lamb Karahi, cold chaat, Mullagatwany Soup, Vege Samosas, and the naan is delicious. Never disappointed. This place is a cut above! I suspect some of the nay-sayers don't know more authentic Indian, or have had a lunch hour crush bad experience.

Great Indian.. can be a tad sweet.
I love Indian food. I ate a lot of authentic Indian when living in South Africa, and this comes really quite close. It's not the fanciest food, but it tastes great. The Chicken Tikka Masala is my absolute favorite, and has never disappointed me. The Naan breads are adequate, but I tend to wrap the curry with the bread anyway, so I taste the curry more anyway. Overall, I highly recommend.

average tasting food. period
If you have zeroed this place as good "Indian" Restaurant for lunch, you would be disappointed. Food taste is flat in adequate spices and curry is no where near to its Indian version. If coriander powder and garam masala are the only spices in Chola masala curry then you'll enjoy it, unlike me. Palak paneer was nice with minimal butter.

Good value
Am vegetarian so do not get to try all the dishes, but this place sure is value for money. Less cream and oil in the gravy than some other places, so tastes healthier.
