This place is a classic New York establishment ... highly underrated in my opinion compared to other establishments of the same calibre. GREAT service, with a professional and classy tie-wearing waitstaff. Homestyle Italian cooking that is exactly what it should be. I don't have a bad word to say about the place. Unfortunately the slew of Italian-Fusion B.S. , or over priced Northern Italian places with corny names that have invaded the city have people fooled on what going out for Italian should be. If you like 'old school' down home Italian cooking, decor and atmosphere reminicient of a better and simplier time, and excellent service that makes you feel like royalty, then this place is for you. I'm not sure if they make their cheese on site (I wouldn't be surprised if they did) but the mozzerella they serve is some of the freshest and best I've ever had This place is for real people , not walking, talking amature food bloggers who are expecting the world every time they sit down in front of a plate. If you want to be reminded of a time where there were real neighorboods in Manhattan, with neighborhood people operating their own businesses based on tradition - instead of these lame corn-ball transplant celebrity chefs - come to John's. Ask for extra sauce if you're ordering anything with their marinara - its that good!

This is a classic East Village treasure. We have been enjoying John's for many years and it has not changed in relation to providing consistently delicious food with an amazing price point for this type of quality. My favorites are pasta carbonara and baked clams which come in great portion sizes. I recommend for dates or family groups. Also try take out if you are in the neighborhood.

The best Italian restaurant on Manhattan Island. They don't have every dish but it is traditional Italian food done right - like so few restaurants still do. Little Italy has nothing that can compare to it. I can't believe I lived 20 years in NYC and did not know about this place. Top Notch.

nice old time ambiance in a quaint part of the East Village. Good Veal Parm, good baked clams oregenata. I didn't care for the pasta or the meat sauce (too sweet). This place just celebrated their 100th anniversary, so they must be doing something right!

I didn't think anyone could make a tasteless Chicken Parmesan but its here. The chicken was pounded so thin it was unrecognizable and their sauce if that's what you want to call it was tasteless over the overcooked pasta. It was like red water with no trace of taste whatsoever. The garlic bread was just about uncooked and the garlic topping was completely mushy. My friends dinner was no better and it was embarrasing to have brought him here. There are definately other restaurants in the city that one can dine at in the same price range, will take credit cards and have much better food and value. It had come recommended but I don't know why. I have never written a review on a restaurant before but felt compelled to do so. I don't understand all the great reviews here. Perhaps it was just a bad night in the kitchen?

Went here the other night for a birthday celebration. I thought the food, the service, and the prices were fantastic. The portions were tremendous and quite good. I was too full for dessert, but other people were raving about the deserts (they looked delicious and were HUGE).

The last review from NYC Foodie must be a joke and anyone who calls themselves NYC Foodie well enough said and if you are a foodie why are you at John's?? Born and raised in NY I have eaten everywhere. The Terrace at Columbia all the way to Chinatown and everywhere in between. Who orders shrimp cocktail at Johns?? Johns is old school Italian done right, nothing more and nothing less, great salad, great veal or chicken parm, lasagna, veal limone, and garlic bread ( though it can be burnt at times,so send it back and they will replace it) nice people and a lovely place to sit and great for a big group.Sit in the back with all the candles. So go eat and enjoy and try the tartufo...actually the only one in NY that I have ever liked....but not as good as Piazza Navona in Rome.
