I was on the street to go to Prune, but the wait was too long; Tried JoeDoe instead and it was excellent. I had the "You wish you were a vegetarian." It was a wonderful and unique brunch dish (yummy spicy Jicima salad). The Bloody Mary is delicious, too. Portions are huge by my NYC standards. Biscuits with honey butter are excellent. Can't wait to go back.

My wife and I couldn't deal with the 2 hour wait for Prune (and think its a little overrated), so we decided to check out JoeDoe across the street which was crowded, but could take us right away. Turned out to be the right choice. We started with what was the best Bloody Mary I've had in the city - nice and spicy. We split the liver sandwich (creamy chicken liver with a little crunch from the bacon and sweetness from the onions) and the Corn Duck Hash (perfect topped with two poached eggs and some braised red cabbage) - both were delicious and more innovative than what you'd expect at a neighborhood place. Overall, it was a well balanced, hearty meal full of flavor for a very reasonable price. Really no complaints, other than the obnoxious couple sitting next to us. Way to go Joe.

I live next door and wanted to try the place for quite a while. I expected this to be another cosy little place. To keep it short, Country and other weird music was playing too loud in the place, the portions were rather small, especially for the price and quality of food was mediocre. On top of it, only two types of red wine by the glass for +12$. With all the choices in the area, certainly not a place I'll go back to.

If you have not been to Joedoe yet, go! This chef is certain to do big things. The food is innovative and consistently delicious. Interesting taste combinations that are expertly executed both in the kitchen and at the bar. Warm and cozy, refinement that is down to earth and friendly.

My wife and I went to JoeDoe this past Saturday night, excited to get something other than Thanksgiving leftovers. We ended up at JoeDoe, which we sought out, having read the great review in TONY. The room is tiny, but what's there looks great - the owners obviously spent a lot of time and money outfitting the place and its paid off. The place was empty when we got there (7:30) except for a couple at the bar, so we were seated right away. We started with drinks and two apps, the lobster and the liver and onion sandwich. The drinks were good, but very pricey (think $13-14) and both apps were really excellent - well cooked with great flavors - and the portions were really big as well. We decided to share an entree and went with the cod. It was well cooked, but the flavor of the broth and fish was nothing special and the portions were a bit small, esp. compared to the apps. The service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal (as would be expected with a virtually empty restaurant). All in all, we definitely had a good experience, but we're not totally sold on the place. It's a neighborhood-type place, but the prices for the drinks and mains are a bit high for that. With all of the competition in the area, it needs to differentiate itself to carve out a following...I'm not sure it's doing that now, but maybe they'll refine things in the future. It would be a shame if they didn't at least get the chance to try.

Well worth a trip across town, this tiny spot is a hidden treasure. A short menu with lots of great choices, creative food that you can watch the chefs prepare. The meal started with complimentary deep fried chickpeas, salty, crispy and just enough oil that one knew to forget about calories. The dueling pork special was smoky and roasted to perfection, served with a side of mustard spiked coleslaw, tangy with just a hit of heat. Phyllo wrapped goat meat on a bed of savory beans and yogurt sauce, mmmm! Save room for dessert. We had custard with a side of crispy pastry drizzled in honey and sprinkled with salt. Big enough to share, if you're feeling generous toward your dining companions. Excellent service. The waiter was there with water refills before I noticed I needed it, yet didn't hover too much. The only downside was that the background music, while good, was a bit loud. I'm glad I got there before this place becomes too well known to get a reservation.
