My husband I I live in the neighborhood, we got married in a community garden down the street and had our reception across the street at Arlo and Esme. Despite some of the worst service we've had at any Manhattan restaurant, we ate at Joe Doe at least once or twice a month since they opened and all throughout my pregnancy. The food is good and when Prune is too busy or full, it was our easiest alternative. After the baby was born we decided to come in for brunch one day and were told that they did not allow any children in the restaurant under the age of eight. WTF??? This place is clearly not a bar, where it would make sense not to have children, but come on! And where did they get the arbitrary age of eight anyway? It was one of the single most ridiculous things I have ever been told by a restaraunt barely scraping by on the basis of its for the most part good food. What a horrible and ugly attitude. Fortunately, there are too many other great restaurants in the East Village, Alphabet City, and the Lower East Side to ever have to go there again.

Had to review because it was one of the best places I have been to in years! The service is wonderful and the food is outstanding. We had passover dinner and it was amazing. The brisket was one of the best I have ever had. I can't say enough about this place. This is a must for food lovers. I can't wait to return for brunch and dinner again!

Last night was one of our best friends birthday party, twelve of us went to Joe Doe to celebrate on a fixed price, limited option menu (Because of the size of the party) . Let me preface this by saying that the chef is phenomenal. The food is inventive, the flavors are unusual and surprising but pleasing and delightful. We were quite impressed with that part of the evening. However, even though the 12 of us basically filled the place, save for a table of 2, a table of 4 and whomever came and went at the small bar, the music was blasting so loud that I actually went to the waiter and said (nicely): 'Since it's just us in here, would you be kind enough to turn the music down a tiny bit so we don't have to scream at each other?' To which he said: ' No that's the vibe, that's the way the owner wants it, there is nothing I can do, it's actually going to get louder ad the night goes on' (With a big smile on his face). The 'cooler than thou' service was acceptable early on but got truly annoying in the context of constant auditory assault. I do not want to have the description of my dish screamed at me over 'walk this way' on stun in the background. I just don't. To finish the night on a bang, our party got basically kicked off the table because 'another party' is waiting. At $60 fixed price for an appetizer entree and dessert without wine, you'd think that we would be entitled a little time to enjoy dinner. Nope. Wait, there's more: With wine, our bill ended up being $92.08 each w included gratuity (More than 6 guests) of $16.92 for a total of $109.00, which is what the receipt says and what we signed for while standing and putting our coats on, being ushered out the door fissa. In short: steer clear save for takeout (Maybe) Blah.

Wasn't even expecting to go out to eat. We went in for Saturday Brunch. What a pleasure! The drinks were really well done. Mimosa with sparkling apple cider instead of orange juice and an amazing side car on the rocks. The quality of the food was terrific. House made sausage and belly bacon grits. Really?! So hard to find good grits. Well, look no further. They are here. Can't wait to go back.

went here with my boyfriend last night and had a truly amazing experience, food was flawless and the ambiance was so laid back. the menu changes daily, everything is fresh and local and seasonal, and i felt like i was eating in my mothers kitchen. its so intimate and the food was top notch - owned by a couple, and they are both awesome and so incredibly chill. if you appreciate good, local food, GO! worth every penny. and the wildflower honey custard for dessert is a MUST if they have it that day!

Have been here numerous times, for both brunch and dinner over the course of 9 months and my bf and I keep returning to this special place. Joedoe has wonderful, inventive food and you can taste the pride and care that went into making each dish, their atmosphere is like visiting a memory of home (if that makes any sense) but with the best food possible and the service is so warm and inviting. We also happen to be adventerous eaters (and love meat, which helps) and have tried all kinds of delicious dishes and flavor combinations I've rarely, if ever, seen elsewhere. I hate giving away my special place but want this terribly creative chef and his wonderful partner to succeed and get the recognition they deserve!

Good food. Entree portions were large. Except the appetizers were a bit small. Brunch was very very good. Come early otherwise you wont get a seat :)
