Dunno what the gripes are about
I go to Joe Hug Deli often because the sandwiches make the experience worth it. I've met and talked with the owner and he's a bright, vibrant guy with a big smile on his face and looks genuinely happy to see you. Thumbs up from me.

If you don't come, they will go....
This is, possibly, the most unpleasant store in Manhattan. The men that work there are sullen, suspicious and, in the event of ANY kind of problem - incorrect change, inconsistent pricing, incorrect delivery - threatening, as well as unhelpful. Their pricing has always been so high - and inconsistent - as to be unconscionable. Truly shocking. There is NO reason to shop here when there are plenty of wonderful little markets within a block or two in any direction.

Not good
Living in the area, I frequent Hug Deli often. Known that it is expensive, I anticipate getting ripped off. However, the more I purchase items from them, the more unprofessional and rude service I receive. Watch how they total your items, they like to take advantage and rip you off when possible.

Got taken advantage of with change.
I am sorry to have to post this because while I used to walk 3 extra blocks from my closest deli to get sandwiches here, tonight I was treated very rudely, which is something I have seen happen to others before, but just not to me. My total was 16.03. I gave a 20 and a 1 and was rummaging around for change so I could get a 5 back. I know this because I keep 20's in one part of my wallet and 1's in another compartment I had opened both, and I needed a 5 for my laundry machine. Both the 20 and the 1 were on top of the cash register. Then, I found a dime and gave it to the man behind the counter (I think the owner). I noticed him counting out ones from the drawer (my20 and my single were still on top) and I said "Just a 5 is okay." He said "NO - 4 dollars." I said, "Well, I gave you 21 dollars, so I receive 5 back. I don't need the 7 cents though." He pointed to the dollar and said "My money." I said, "I KNOW that I gave you 21 dollars and 10 cents, so I should get at least 5 dollars back." At this point the younger man working behind the sandwich line came over as the older man repeated "My dollar" in not a nice way. (Oh, by the way, I am a 5'2, 120 pound female, who was wearing pajamas - not too threatening) to see what was going on and I just said, "I'm not going to argue, but I know what is right. And I'm sorry, but I'm going to need to find a new deli." I'm sorry but that's the truth. I felt very upset.

Random place with a great Sandwich
I would never think to order a sandwich here, Iam picky, the cuban is the best anywhere, it is fantastic and you half to try it. I have been several places and tried to get something similar and it is never as good as here!

Roast Pork
Try the Roast Pork Special (number C-6, I have it memorized). It's great!
