Jimbo's Hamburger Palace
Posted by unsatisfied customer on 07/09/2010
I ordered a turkey burger deluxe and I was very disappointed. The turkey burger was spongy and had no flavor. The fries were skinny, soggy, and tasteless. For $9.00, I expected much, much more. In addition, the decor of the "restaurant" was kind of drab and dingy. Looking back, I should've left as soon as I saw the atmosphere.

Not so much.

From burgers to PhiilyCheesesteaks, this place is indeed a palace. I have been ordering delivery from them for 16 years and the food and service has never wavered. Burgers done on the flat top grill are the absolute best. I have spent my life in the wine and food business and Jimbos rules. It is a neighborhood treasure. To not look at in that light is just foolish. I couldn't imagine a better burger/sandwich joint.

The cook never acknowledges you when you give in your order. Not a nod, smirk, sniff, cough, nor blink. Got the Texas Burger done medium well because they use frozen patties and I can't do medium rare from a freezer disc. The guy poke holes in my burger with his spatula to make it cook faster, and then practically pressed out all traces of moisture. When I picked up my burger, it fell right out of the bun into three pieces. I was livid. Even as I spoke up, he just continued to ignore me. The burger was dry as a sponge, and my coworkers and I left smelling like wet beef. Don't even bother with this place.

Great hidden treasure in the middle of nowhere. I got EXACTLY what I came looking for: A Huge, Meaty, Classic burger, that wasn't a frozen patty. I came for take out which is recommended if you don't plan on sitting at the counter, watching the cook make the meal. Other than that- Take your burger to go... get home... praise the Lord, and chow down! (And I'm not a much of a fry eater but... I liked the fries and so did everyone else that kept digging in my plate.)

I enjoy eating at Jimbo's and highly recommend the hamburger. It's good quality and they grill it to order fresh. I am disappointed by the French Fries, though. They come out of a freezer bag and have no taste. They're just not worth the calories! It's amazing how much better French Fries can be just about anywhere else. Nearly every diner or fast food joint has good fries. It's a shame that Jimbo's opts for the cheapest most tasteless fries available. My advice: just get the burger!

Walk down First Avenue and you could very well miss this place. It's TINY! It doesn't matter though, because if you are on the same side of the street as Jimmy's, you will be lured by the amazing smell of HAMBURGER. You could be blindfolded and you would know - this scent is not a steak it is a large, juicy burger. Your mouth will water. I walked by this place several times on my way home from work, and one day I was just drawn in because it smelled amazing. The burger did not disappoint - large, cooked medium rare as ordered, juicy, and with cheese, L&T, and fries, heaven on a plate. Also, bonus points in my book to a place in Manhattan that does not give a rat's @$$ about being anything but a burger joint/lunch counter. This place is timeless, but places like this are becoming rare in Manhattan, where we are falling prey to theme park ambiance. Recommended.
