    Tasting Menu

My friends and I had one of each of the tasting menu and except for the mushy crab cake, were very pleased. The drinks specials though are mainly ice and barely two fingers. Lovely atmosphere and such a central location.

    unpleasant experience

poor customer service and unacommodating host/manager. We went their for my birthday party and boy did they ruin it completely! First of all, the waiter spilled soy sauce/wasabi mix all down my jacket but didn't even say sorry. Secondly they nickle and dime you for everything and i mean everything. Plus they add 20% gratuity on everything as well. In summary - poor service, unpleasant manager, small portion on the food, subpar atmosphere .

    great happy hour

I went here for the first time with some work friends. They have an amazing happy hour. Such good drink prices. 4 dollars in new york is unheard of! We sat in the beautiful area upstairs. Usually when we go out the waiter has a hard time keeping our checks seperate, but our waitress didn't seem the least bothered. The hamburger was fantastic, but the sushi choices were pretty average. A great deal, we'll definitely be back.

    fantastic

Aside from a rude hostess, our experience at japonais was fantastic. tuna ceviche, lobster spring rolls and the rock was to die for!!!we ended up ordering another order of the rock as i ate the whole first dish... the duck dish was also great. i recommend to get this dish as like semi appetizer to share among a group. the nigiri sushi was surprisingly good. i love nigiri and i frequent sushi of yasuda and gari. I did not expect such great nigiri from non traditional japanese sushi restaurant. well done! Apple toban yaki was a great warm dessert. the vanilla ice cream that you add before eating mixed well with warm caramel soaked apples. Our server was an old asian man. he made great suggestions! thanks dude well, this restaurant totally made our night!

    Not Great for Valentine's Day

It was clear that if you were under 35, you had to sit at the tiny tables in the upstairs lounge. I'm only 5'4 and my knees were a couple inches higher than the table. We asked to be reseated because we couldn't eat like that! After a few minutes, they gave us a slightly better table on the mezzanine, but still not a normal person table downstairs. We dealt with it, but it was far from comfy. Our server was actually quite doting. I think he knew that we were miserable at the table. The food was a mixed bag. Our sweet and sour calimari was drenched in sauce. It had good flavor, but you couldn't even tell it was calimari. The bibb salad was tasty, and my husband said his miso soup was fine. He loved his filet mignon and I thought it was good too. But it took a while to come out. Our server brought us edamame free of charge to hold us over which we thought was nice. My 2 sushi rolls came out a few minutes after the filet mignon, and it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. Not so great. I imagine on a night when it's not so packed, everything's a little better, but I won't be back to test my theory.

Trust the other negative reviews for this place

Atmosphere is good however; service is one of the worst ever seen. I wanted to give them a small tip for the horrible service but was shocked that the 20% gratuity is included in the bill. No wonder they dont care about the satisfaction of their service. Believe me, not worth waiting over 1 hr for ur entrees to come out along with mandatory 20% tip... Just trust all the negative reviews. I didn't and I must agree as well.

    Don't bother

Tried Japonais after hearing great things about it - I'm sorry I even tried it. The service is poor. I made a dinner reservation and they tried to seat us in the lounge section with tiny tables that you would have to hunch over to eat on. The portions are tiny. I left feeling hungrier than when I came. The waiter was rude and must have been a magician b/c he kept disappearing. IF you are going to go the only thing to get is a beef appetizer that is prepared on a rock.
