    The Good and the Bad

I have been ordering from this place for a while now and will keep on doing so because this is just the kind of 'buffet style' food you find in the south and midwest - where I am from. It's just ok but satisfies a craving. The only complaints I have are: the food almost always arrives cold and they never give you the condiments you request. I've probably ordered from here a dozen times over the years and have maybe gotten 3 or 4 hot meals. Not a huge deal to me as it is delivery from Red Hook all the way to me. But for a BBQ joint they always give you a ridiculous amount of BBQ sauce! Like, a 2-4 oz container for a huge portion of chicken or pork and cornbread. I always ask for extra and even offer to pay for a small container and they always say "ok" but NEVER send it. Never. I will keep on getting this grub but hope the manager sees this and steps up the condiment game. You must send extra BBQ.

Good Brooklyn BBQ that's not a chain

We love Barbeque and are psyched to have a good BBQ place in the neighborhood. Their staple BBQ chicken is almost always great. Their BBQ sauce is so good. However this place falls just short of being great ... stick to the basics - chicken, ribs and buffalo wings - and you'll be very satisfied. The somewhat gelatinous hamburgers and their oversize kaiser buns are a big letdown. The half roasted chicken feeds 2 of us, and is a great value. The sides that come with every meal are good - mashed potatoes are our favorite. An example of the unevenness of Jakes: the Chili. What is going on there? It's really disappointing; huge chunks of pork, too much cheese, not enough beans and slathered in what tastes like tomato paste. Overall, the simple fact that you can have a BBQ meal at your coffee table, makes Jakes something to be grateful for. You might not want to take a date here, though.

    unpleasant

i'll start out with the positives. the delivery came fast, the guy was really nice, and the order came with a lot of food - the portions were nice and big and each meal came w/ 2 sides. my friend and i were starving. i got the smoked beef briskette and he got the pulled pork & chicken. we split our meals so we could try both items. i have nothing else positive to say. the quality of the beef, pork, and chicken were among the worst i've had in the past decade. i normally eat very fresh & clean food (in every food group). all the meat was soft, mushy, and fatty and tasted like it had been made 2-3 days ago, and microwaved a couple times. the sauce tasted fresh out of the Kraft BBQ jar - disgusting! the hash browns reminded me of the high school cafeteria way back - the bulk ones that are frozen and heated but end up with a dry, spongy texture after they re-serve the leftovers from 2 days ago. actually the hash browns felt rubbery like old pancakes. the collard greens also tasted old and microwaved. the only thing that tasted fresh and was "edible" was the side of broccoli. before eating this, today was one of the best days i've had all year. i had an incredible amount of energy, and after eating this i felt sick, dizzy, tired, and weak. you know that feeling you get from eating greasy food, or fast food. well, your body doesnt lie. and usually i feel energized after a meal... if you like fast food chains, i'm sure you'll love Jake's. you're better off going to a diner.

If this is good BBQ...you never ate good BBQ

Dissapointed once again even though the ratings here said good! First the server was not exactly top notch - when asked what vegetable she would suggest she said the collard greens were not too bad.... not exactly a rave review. And that was just one of many poor responses. Then my husband wanted the hangar steak..he just wasn't in the mood for BBQ. Well don't order that..it wasn't good. It tasted like old, dry meat that had no seasoning or real flavor! His rice also seemed old and dry! His broccolli was not overcooked but lacked any seasoning. I got the pork ribs and though the pork was moist, it obviously lacked ANY seasoning too. The sauce was tasty but without dousing it, the meat had no flavor. The potatos were creamy yet again lacked any seasoning or salt. The cole slaw was tangy but way too wet. Not sure what people were talking about when they said delicious..I would recommend that you just try to find a real BBQ place instead.

    barely trying

It's hard not to wonder why NYC BBQ has such a bad rap with so many amazing chefs across most regions of the country. Places like Jake's help to solve part of the mystery - some of them don't even try! Sad to say my first Jake's (delivery) experience went pretty rough. Worst was the brisket and pulled pork - both a similar preparation. Large sliced cuts of meat (think poor sliced steak!) drizzled with sauce. No marination, no slow cook, nothing. Pork ribs were a bit better, at least they were cooked properly. Cornbread was tasty enough but baked beans could have been canned. The bbq quest continues!!

    oasis of brooklyn

I just can't believe that I stumbled into this incredible restaurant in the middle of nowhere! After watching the sun go down over the East River we went for a walk down on Columbia St. and discovered a BBQ restaurant with the most amazing ribs and beef brisket anwhere on this planet! Fantastic macaroni and cheese, collards and cornbread to match. Jake's is a true jewel of a restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Only the waterfront view and the Manhattan skyline matches the awesome Q!
