A good night out
Looking for a Brazilian Restaurant after our Christmas Week(Friday) matinee we choose Ipanema. This was our first venture into this cuisine and it was a good choice. We were seated right away and the service, food and beverages were great. Prices are reasonable. I don't know how it compares to to other Brazilian restaurants but if you want a good meal at a decent price don't be afraid to give it a try.

Expensive subparfood and service
The staff will press you to order much more food that you really need. There is a 5 USD fee for sharing food, just like the top gourmet restaurant of the world (something that they aren't at all!) That is also impossible to customize anything in the menu... If you want to have some Brazilian food with real Brazilian service and environment, dont go there.

Everything is amazing
I love this place! I live in Washington Heights and I make time to get down to this restaurant as often as possible. The service is wonderful, it has a family/romantic environment, and the food is just great and wonderfully priced. I love the Picanha Fatiada: aged grilled marinated top sirloin. My second choice is the Vatapa: monkfish and shrimp smothered in a shrimp puree. dende oil, nuts and spices. Every time I recommend this place, people love it. Never too crowded or too empty. But closes at 10pm so plan your evening around dinner.

Rude service and below average food
I ordered fish grilled with Brazilian spices and when the dish came out the entree had no spices at all, just a dry piece of fish. I mentioned this to the waiter and he handed me the salt and pepper. The fish itself wasn't even that fresh. My wife did not like her diner either, the most unappetizing mariscada she ever had - the shrimp were so over cooked you couldn't even chew them. Don't go here.

Disappointed
The Caipirinhas and service were really great but I'm not sure what's happening in the kitchen. Not a good appetizer or seafood dish. I love Brazilian food but this was not good Brazilian food.

Amazing!
I've never experienced Brazilian food before going to Ipanema so I can't compare it to other types of Brazilian-Portuguese cuisine, but it is AMAZING. I go to New York City multiple times a year and I make sure I stop in at least once during every stay. I usually order the Salada Ipanema and it is so good it is difficult for me to stray away from it but I do want to open my options. My boyfriend is Portuguese so he always accompanies me when we go to Ipanema, and he is always willing to try something new. We have shared: Vatapa (I wasn't going to try it because it looked nothing like anything I have eaten before but it was absolutely fantastic!), Peixe Nantua (which was different but still good), and Paelha (which was totally worth the wait!!). The service is astonishing, and the waitstaff genuinely cares for the patrons. I honestly cannot wait to go back!
