Don't order by phone
It's like a comedy act to order by the phone from this place -- the order takers don't speak English, it will take forever to communicate with them and your food will arrive with the order entirely messed up. As another reviewer said, "Walk on by."

Great pasta.
We went here on recommendation of our hotel and were very happy! Food was great, pasta was beautifully al dente with lovely fresh sauce. Service friendly and efficient. Having visited Italy several times we could have been served this food there quite easily.

Walk On By: Mediocre at Best
Ate here by default (our original destination was closed) on a very chilly Monday evening in January 2008. While the decor is appealing seen from the street, we should have gone with our gut reaction upon entering: NORBIT was playing on a giant plasma above the bar not exactly appetizing! Once past the bar the room opens into a fairly generic red-banquettes seating arrangement w/ b&w photos of Italians eating pasta. It's clean-looking, though fairly uninspiring. Nice wine & prosecco glasses, and nice flatware as well. Opened with fried calamari: big mistake. Straight out of the freezer, no doubt (which isn't a crime, seems likely 80% of the fried calamari in the city would be the same) but totally uninspired presentation and sauce. An artfully cut lemon was the standout on the plate. "Pera" salad was truly offputting, with enormous round slices of un-ripened pear dumped on top of a sloppy bed of greens and gorgonzola. Again, no attempt at presentation here (if an attempt was made, it failed.) Mozzarella/tomato/basil salad was considerably better & fresher, quite tasty. Just slabs on a plate, but relatively appealing slabs so our hope was restored for the main courses. Entree #1: Meat tortellini with mushrooms, peas (and bacon?) was smothered in a yellowish cream saucenearly the color of hollandaiseaside from the color, there was nothing objectionable about it, though it seemed generic, sloppy, and bland. Entree #2: Chicken paillard atop a bed of arugula and tomato was quite a bit betterfresh, light, pretty to look at. Wines we consumed by the glass were adequate, split an agreeable tartufo for dessert. Service by busy, attractive young ladies and attentive servers was fine, though impersonal. I've certainly had worse meals, but I've rarely had such generically Olive-Garden experiences at such expense (final bill was $140 incl. tip). New Yorkers deserve betterand can find it just down Eighth Avenue at any of a dozen better venues. In truth you could replicate this meal across the street at the diner, The Dish, and it would be better made & served. So when you find yourself in front of Intermezzo on a chilly nightkeep walking!

A solid "B"
Everything was worth it...good food, nice pour on the wine, and waitstaff was great. The only thing I wondered about was the Maitre'D...no acknowledgement whatsoever...why even have one.

Cosy, and good value!
Tuesdays, our movie night in Chelsea, affords my friends and me an opportunity to sample various restaurants around 23rd street and Intermezzo has had many repeat visits from us. I like the atomosphere, service and above all the food and presentation. I am finiky about serviceand the have never given me an opportunity to complain. :-) We're been there from 5:45 p.m. to around 7:00 ish. Never been crowded during that time.
