I've had their takeout a few times because my friends enjoy it. I don't know why. Tonight's in-restaurant experience, however, will be my last with Indian Cafe. We ordered the special naan, which said it had cheese, onion and tomato. What we got was essentially a poor quesadilla. The cheese was something between oily generic cheddar and Velveeta (yes, there's a place for it, but not here). There were a few tiny bits of tomato, but no onion, and no flavor at all. The bread itself was of rather dry texture and chewy. I ordered the vegetarian thali, and my friend got the chicken version. They were the same, except I had veggies in tomato sauce where she had chicken. They used frozen veggies and cooked them poorly in all veggie dishes. The food had very little taste, and everything red was in the same tomato paste from a can, which tasted like the can. You can't just add a bit of heat and call it sauce! The saag was somewhat better, but still bland, and the paneer was just off. Also the raita was sweetened (Could barely tell it from the rice pudding, which was thoroughly average). The pickle was the same frozen veggies but without sauce. Had almost no taste except a barely perceptible sourness and a freezer-burned texture. The naan, from which I usually derive a somewhat glutinous pleasure, was dry and pleasureless. A note on the takeout: it is also bland, and tends to be intensely oily as well, but it has come with good naan.

I took my mother there for her birthday tonight and we were greeted with a big smile from the whole staff. The waiter was more than happy to answer any questions about the menu and make recommandations. The food was wonderful, very fresh, though not quite spicy enough. And the desserts were comped for my moms bday. Had a great time.

If you want great tasting Indian vegetarian dishes without heavy caloric creamy sauces then this is the place to get it. Nice vegetarian dishes, the food is consistently good but the portions are not consistent.

I am not sure what is up with the negative reviews, but personally this is the best Indian Food I have ever had (and yes I have been all over the country and London). The service is amazingly fast, beyond nice and helpful, and the price is very fair. This is one of my favorite places to eat and everyone I have ever taken there (which is quite a few people) agree it is the best Indian food they have ever had. I usually get the chicken mahkni or the chickpeas w/ spinach, both are amazing. While I am not sure what other people are looking for, I suggest you give it a try. I have never seen a disappointed patron.

what can I say.... bland, bland, bland. The shrimp was a frozen concoction of yellow food coloring and yogurt and the goat was a life wasted.

Let me keep it 100 with the audience - Im a UWS native - this place not good! Its McIndian cuisine - service is okay - had the korma and it came out like white salted water.

I have only gotten delivery to this point, but the negative comments are really overblown. Being indian, I tend to be fairly picky about the food. Is it the best I had? No. But I think the food is better than solid. And some dishes, like the chicken biryani, are excellent.
