great!
i have come to il laboratorio for nearly 3 years on and off and if anything they have only gotten better. their use of fresh fruit in their ice creams and sorbets is obvious and unmatched. most other places use frozen fruit or a smaller amount. but this stuff always tastes like biting right into the fruit. they have over a 100 flavors which they rotate among daily. their primary business is supplying some of the better restaurants in NY so its not fair to rate the ambience here. its just a walk up window. but everything is made in the back and the frozen stuff here is some of the best ive tasted anywhere in the world!

What happened?
Used to be a big fan, but today their gelato was not good. What happened to you, Laboratorio? All three flavors of gelato we tried were way too buttery, like eating chilled butter instead of ice cream. Two of them, the rice flavor and the marscapone flavor, had no flavor at all, and one, the fig, had a mild, decent figgy flavor that was still ruined by the far-too-rich gelato base. The one sorbet we ate, Campari-Grapefruit, tasted excellent, although the texture was less than ideal. We actually threw away most of what we had bought; I never thought I would throw ice cream in the trash, much less ice cream from what had been one of my favorite spots in the city.

Good Gelato
Good gelato with various unusual flavors. Some are seasonal. Not all the flavors listed on the website (listed as having 75 flavors) are available. A bit pricey but worth the flavor.

Exquisite!
This is my favorite ice cream/gelato/sorbet shop in New York! The black sesame ice cream was a big hit last night. Tangerine and lemon were also very nice. The vanilla is incredible, rich, flavorful, full-bodied. I go as often as I can! Make sure to taste as many flavors as you like before ordering--that's half the reason for going here.

Overrated
I was very excited to try their delicious sounding, avante garde flavors. I traveled almost two hours to get there- perhaps that was the problem because I just experienced a let-down. Don't get me wrong- the flavors I sampled were good- pistachio, cantaloupe and a few others...but they definitely were not worth the price (over $3 for the smallest small cup I have ever seen)- I have had much better gelato all over the city. My guess is due to the extensive flavor list and the fact that they limit the amount they sell on a daily basis adds to the allure- don't fall for the hype. Unless you're in the neighborhood do not go out of your way for what amounts to decent but overpriced gelato.

Yum
Ice cream is great, but expensive. I wish they also served all the flavors listed on their website.

Sublime
Came upon the lab while wandering aimlessly and was blown away by the fig concoction. prices seemed reasonable. this will be a definite return spot. although it's a bit out of the way, there's enough around to keep one occupied all day.
