New Chef, new rules
Heard from a friend of mine in the restaurant biz that there is a new chef here. Tried to look it up, but there doesn't seem to be any press about it. The room was definitely quiet, but I felt like I had something special despite the quiet surroundings. The appetizer was overreaching for me (okanamayaki - crab and short rib pancake. Very tasty, but a bit too much going on) Sat at the counter, and had Duck pho - which was insane. The breast was perfectly seared, seasoned, and the broth has a rich flavor and body without being dense. $6 sixpoints. Definitely worth a visit.

Not good
Place was empty, food took forever, sides came first (bok choy way overcooked, sprouts overcooked and oversauced). Pork belly noodles, tasteless, noodles homemade my a*(&*. These are dried noodles for 18 bucks Do yourself a favour - go to deli, buy noodle cup with fresh veg and add hot water. That will 100% surpass this abortion. (waitress was good though)

I’m really surprised at the number of people who liked this restaurant. My husband and I went there on April 17th for lunch. We placed our order, and everything went rapidly downhill. For appetizers I ordered the short ribs, and my husband ordered the rabbit loin. My appetizer was delivered within 5 minutes or so. My husband’s came 15 minutes later, at the same time as his entree. For entrées we had the squash soup and oxtail soup. They were absolutely bland, and we needed to use the hot sauces on the table to provide a little flavor. To make matters worse the incompetent waiter spilled hot soup all over me. No apology from the waiter, hostess or any other staff members. When it came time to pay the waiter ran the charge through twice. In addition, the couple sitting next to us ordered short ribs, and never received their order. Incidentally, the restaurant was not crowded when we arrived – only 2 other couples so there is no excuse for such incompetent service. I’m also surprised that someone mentioned a very electic wine and beer list. Most restaurants have wines and beers from all over the world. At Hung Ry everytime we order a drink they were out of that particular item. Poor service and poor management.

So much fun
Lets be honest: the pulled-noodle places on the edge of Chinatown are tacky, and the broth is sometimes weird. Here you get the noodles in excellent broths and in an environment where you can relax and enjoy yourself: even have a beer or glass of wine. It costs a little more, but it's well worth it.

Beyond Overhyped
Went recently and place was packed and sat at the bar by very accommodating host. When ordering--clueless bartender had no idea about 2 of the dishes. Asked for recommendations on wine and he had never tasted a couple of them. Had the short rib w/ foam and the squid w/chilies to start. Short rib was good quality and well prepared but foam seemed throw everything off. Squid was OK. Duck noodles: sliced duck breast w/ gizzard tasty: broth very bland--it was like hot water w/ soy. Squash broth really good---needed more charred tamarind. Had the thick noodles---and great texture and taste. Probably won't come back.

Not going back
Don't know why the other reviewers are so pleased. They didn't have our reservation when we walked in for lunch. The hostess looked at us as if we were making it up--there was no need to as they had empty tables. Water arrived 15 minutes later... the appetizers took another 15-20 minutes and were kind of bland. The noodles were the biggest disappointment. They took close to 40-45 minutes to arrive. The reviews so far led me to think they would be as good as some of the other ramen places / chinatown noodle shops. There is no comparison. Any reputed chinatown soup noodle shop or popular Japanese ramen place is much better. Don't waste your time here.
