    substandard greasy chinese food

Mediocre food. The lomein was even subpar. The person on the phone taking the order was in a such a rush to get me off the phone that part of my order was not delivered. Stale fortune cookie. Go somewhere else if you want good chinese food, you won't get it from this restaurant.

    Best chinese on the UWS

The only high quality chinese place in the area. The hot and sour soup i good, the wonton even better. The homestyle hunan chicken with greenbeens is delicious, and for every ten dollars you spend on delivery you get a free itern. Delivery is generally quick. Love this place.

    I've always loved this place

I've been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. I use to live in the city and would go there with my best friend from high school. When I got married I started going there with my husband. Now I take my children there. Mind you I haven't lived in the city for 10 years. My last time there was April 2006 after going to the Auto show. The place has chaged hands but the food is still good. It lets you know just how bad other chinese food is. The one thing they do that really bothers me is they put lemon in a pitcher of water and when you ask for a glass of water that's what they pour it from. I can't stand the taste of lemon in water and I always forget to ask for plain water. Other then that I'll be there within the next few weeks to take some more family members there. This time my sister her family and my mother. Keep up the good work.

    No thanks

The general tso's tofu came in a extremely sweet, viscous puddle of flavorless sauce. The sushi was middling. The service was curt and unattentive, despite the fact that there were only two other occupied tables. The atmosphere and the food were not up to my standards.

    Great value

Just recently got some sushi from this place. Their prices are onpar with other value restaurants in the area. The House Special Roll is my fav, and is nice and spicey. I was pleasantly surprised that the person taking my order asked me which free item I would like (referring to the coupon the front of the menu) --- I didnt even have to mention it.

    Best Kept Chinese Restaurant Secret

I found out about the Hunan Balcony 18 years ago when I worked in the area. They offered then (as they still do now) an affordable lunch special. The food and service were both excellent. I later treated my father and daughter to a nice dinner there. The Hunan Balcony became our "Family Restaurant" since then. What other restaurant in NY gives you a full course lunch (that you can identify) for under $6.00? The atmosphere is pleasant, the service is excellent, the food is delicious and the value is stupendous (even at dinnertime).

    Best Chinese in the City

I lived on the UWS from 1981-1991 and went to Hunan Balcony all the time. I've been living in London ever since and have travelled the world, but still haven't found a Chinese restaurant as good as Hunan Balcony. Back in town for a few days and will order from them at least twice. One of the true NYC gems.
