Went there to celebrate some family member birthdays for dinner--where we sat in the outdoor lounge area. Arrived by about 6pm, not so crowded tables and bar, and it was hot outside. By 6:30pm we had to flag someone down in order to have water served. My fiancé and I didn’t wait, nor try to flag down the non-attendant waitress, so we bought drinks from the bar. Twice. First drink I had to return—the sangria apples still had the supermarket sticker on it. WTH? Since we were a large party of 20 people we had to wait for some of the tables to empty downstairs to accommodate our party. There were only two servers for the entire downstairs—indoors and outdoors, so service was EXTREMELY slow. Finally seated after 8:30pm, several of us tried flagging down the waitress in order for her to take food orders. Some food had already arrived, but she still hadn’t taken everyone’s order. My fiancé and I had questions about the entrees on the menu and when he opened her mouth to ask the second question she had already walked off (this happened a number of times before we even ordered). A special birthday cake was brought in and we were given about 7 plates and forks by the hostess (who looked like she’d rather be someplace else). Can she count? There were about 20 of us. After asking for more plates and forks/spoons for the cake, we were given the bill. The music was pretty good the whole night—got to the R&B/Rap, and then immediately followed with soft rock. Really? And yes, parties of 6 or more are charged 20% gratuity, and with overpriced food and horrible service I won’t be returning. The food was delicious, but everything else was unpleasant. The waitress never stopped by after the food was served to check if everything was okay—customary in restaurants, even diners, so why the 20% gratuity. The wait staff doesn’t even have to try to make an effort with that kind of gratuity charged, and this is why they’ve lost our business—all 20 of us. Perhaps if they train their wait staff to have better attitudes and to smile a little, it might make it worth it for the paying customer.

1. Provide slow service and make several mistakes in the order. 2. Provide unlimited refills of lukewarm coffee. 3. Provide creative entrees that sound much better than they taste. 4. Add the 20% gratuity automatically even if you are not a party of 6 or more. The place is packed, so hopefully the ownership will step up their game.

It's a low key party atmosphere with sofas and music, great for an outdoor evening. A varied selection, attractively served. Don't expect a river view - there's a wall in the way. But it's a blast when the Amtrak zooms by, and the service is all smiles.

The service here stands out in Manhattan as much better than average. The atmosphere comes with a warning...you must be in the mood for a trendy and loud dining experience. For the $ in this area you can find better food. I had an over-cooked experience like another reviewer and was underwhelmed with a seemingly lobsterless lobster quesadilla.

Hudson River Cafe is a beautiful space. The mood is often festive (the music is pretty loud, don't go expecting to have an intimate evening). However, most of the dishes we tried were disappointing. For starters, the kabobs were underseasoned and overcooked. The cocunut shrimp were kept in the fryer too long and the coating overpowered the sweetness of the shrimp. The best thing I had that night were the yucca fries and the calamari crispy salad. It has the potential to be a great great restaurant if somehow they work on uting the dishes so that they are consistently good.

This place is ok but def not fine dining and not worth the price. 1. The best thing about it is the atmosphere and they have a great space. 2. Wait staff could be more attentive. 3. Drinks are not good - i ordered a pitcher of sangria and it tasted like nothing, they did not have it premade or prepped so someone dumped OJ and some fruit and tried to pass it off as the real thing - not good. 4. Appetizers - the coconut shrimp was good and the sauce made everything else taste better. the ribs didn't taste like anything, the butternut squash soup was bland and the lobster quesadilla tasted like a block of cheese with guacamole but no lobster. 5. Main Course - Hanger Steak - skip it, the sauce is overwhehlming and you can't taste the steak which isn't that good anyway. Lamb - suppose to be herb crusted I think, but taste like someone dumped a garden on the meat and called it a day. Overall, I'd go back to this place to maybe grab a drink in a pinch, but given that it is no where near where I need to be, I would not go out of my way to go back.
