Hope And Anchor Diner
Posted by Aaron on 11/16/2014
My friend and I have been to Hope and Anchor 7-8 times in a year and a half. We used to love it. Last time we went the music was so loud we complained and the servers said they could not lower it. We were served cold food but it was quickly heated up upon our request (nuked? I'd guess so.) Last week was our final visit. The waiter was charming and savvy but much too overweight to wear a T shirt that rode up exposing his bare belly serving food. The "famous" fries were ice cold; the brioche for my BLT was stale. My friend ordered soup which arrived less than two minutes before his dinner. So by the time he got to his entree, it was cold. He was told that the vegetable du jour was green beans. The vegetable he was served was beans AND brussel sprouts. The place was so dark that we had to use our phone flashlights to read the menu. There were two forks on the floor between our table and the one next to ours. The men's room was dirty.

Hope & Anchor is, by far, the best diner in the area! Everything I've eaten there has been top notch. Best clam cakes this side of New England. The burgers are always a safe bet. If you have the guts, try the Hook, Line and Sinker Burger (I'd like to see an inventive program, such as a free t-shirt or wall of fame if you can finish this monster burger). I've tried practically everything on there menu and have never been disappointed. Service is quick and very friendly. Grab a booth by the large windows. Great spot to people watch. H&A is the beating heart of quintessential Red Hook. I'm so glad they're back after Sandy.

Hip. Loved loved the banana cream pie with gobs of real unsweetened whipped cream, chorizo quesadillas. The turkey burger with avocado, cheddar and tomatoes wonderful. All for about 12 cents!

This comfortable establishment was a pleasant surprise. Meal was relaxed, food fine and prices very affordable. No complaints. Worth a stop when in Red Hook.

The first time we came here, I was in love with the place. The atmosphere is adorable from their menus to the chalkboard walls to the music. The food was delicious too. Only problem - the service was not good at all. Super slow and "too cool" for us. It was a shame, but the food was so good, we tried it again this weekend. Ugh. It makes me sad but I will never go back. I didn't think the service could be worse than the first time, but I was wrong. Our waiter took about 20 minutes to come to our table to take our order, and when he finally showed up he said "dude...I was up all night last night....ha ha ha". He proceeded to totally mess up our order, and while again the food was good, it wasn't what we asked for. And it was slow. And our server thought it was really funny that he was such a poor server. At least he was having fun. We won't return.
