    Superb authentic Chinese Buddhist Veg.

My friends and I went here one evening on a lark after singing classes, and we've been going back ever since. Excellent food and superb value. They do BOTH veg. and regular cooking. So yes, you can bring ALL of your friends along, as long as they like authentic Chinese food. But what's truly amazing here is they do both kinds of cooking in SEPARATE kitchens, one for each! This means joy and relief for Buddhist vegetarian (like me). They cook as I would in my own kitchen, animal-free. Portions are generous, prices very reasonable, the cooking is authentic Chinese (southern to be specific). Taste is balanced; decisive when needed but not overwhelming. As a new vegetarian, what I miss is the texture of familiar foods. And they provide for it superbly with the vast array of Chinese Buddhist soy-based 'meats' available. The vegetarian appetizers are surprisingly good. Decor is nice and the place is well-kept and clean. Relaxed, hip, soothing, with a splash of mementos from the Chinese revolutionary era. And finally it's a BYOB. This means you will have to go around the corner for your favorite beer from the groceries well stocked with beers from around the world for $2. (yes!!) But unlike other places, 'Home on Eighth' cheerfully bring a glass along and charge you nary a penny for what others would called a 'uncorking' fee. As for services, they are very friendly and discreet. Before your eyes scan the room a second time for a wait staff, they have already alertedly pick up on your motion and begin heading your way. Should you care for a conversation about vegetarian fare, just chat them up.

The best lunch in the area

I have worked in this area for over 5 years. There is no better place for a fast lunch. The food is phenomenal. REAL FRIED RICE!! Not that yellow stuff. The staff is really friendly. The interior is not fancy, but it is way nicer than any of those other take out places in the city. Another nice thing is the vegetarian menu. The ginger soymeat is yummy. If you have an extra few bucks in your pocket and a little extra time order the seafood panfried noodles, amazing! It is just like they serve it in Chinatown. Thre are four chinese take out places closer to my office, yet I always go to home on 8th cause i know I won't be dissappointed.

    Great Vegetarian Food

This place is a great place to visit as a vegetarian. The vegetarian food is cooked in a separate kitchen, so you know there will be no lard, or fat used in cooking. The dishes are great. The Chicken medallions are excellent, but most of the dishes "Chicken and Broccoli", "General Cho's Chicken", are fantastic,. The staff is always unusually, almost alarmingly friendly, and the prices are not much more than the low quality Chinese fare found in the grease pits nearby. My only complaint is that the fake meats are not on the lunch menu.

    A Vegan Bonanza!

I had given up on eating Chinese food when I became a vegan, because it was so difficult to find a Chinese restaurant that didn't use lard or beef stock in even the most veggie-sounding dishes (spicy eggplant, scallion pancakes). And honestly lots of Chinese restaurants go heavy on the grease, sweetness and the MSG and light on the quality of the ingredients. Not so Home on 8th, where the awesome, attentive and well-informed staff know exactly what is in every dish, and are happy to guide you through the delicious menu. Portions are just the right size, the quality is so good, and the tastes are sublime. Don't miss their drinks, which are interesting, reasonably priced and delicious (the Passionfruit Juice sounds nothingy but shouldn't be passed up!). I can't say enough about this delicious restaurant. After you've eaten there once, you'll keep coming back, lured by their delicious food and attentive service.

Most disappointing part of moving away..

... was knowing that i wouldn't be able to get food from here as often! home on 8th is SO good - the food is freshly prepared, so yummy, and such a great deal! EXCELLENT vegetarian menu. i would HIGHLY recomment the veggie kung pao chicken. also, the veggie beef medallions. plenty of space to sit. very friendly, informal atmosphere.
