This ain't no Southern Fried Chicken!
Born in Texas, now a confirmed New Yorker, I had been wanting to try Hill Country Chicken for some time in the hopes that I would at last find some "real" fried chicken in the city. I was almost completely disappointed. The portions are large, and the prices are ridiculously low, and the chicken is very moist and succulent. But, alas, the breading/batter is poor: thin, not at all crunchy, and -- worst of all -- oddly sweet, as if they used cheap garlic and onion powders. (On the other hand, the cheesy mashed potatoes were irresistable.) The atmosphere is real Southern cafeteria, and the servers are exceptionally patient and kind. All that said, I'm sticking elsewhere until something better comes along.

expensive and not worth it
saw this profiled on tv and had to try. long line, not cheap and not even as good as kfc and i tried both varieties. did not have the sides as they looked unappetizing. back to my quest for really good fried chicken.

Surprised
I rarely eat fried chicken, never from fast food joints. I was surprised to find this chicken, fresh and juicy. I chose chicken with skin on and it was flavorful as were the sides. The long line moved quickly and staff was helpful and flexible. I went just to buy a pie, which was perfect, juicy, not gluey with real fruit and just enough flaky crust (double cherry pie). Lunch was a nice summer treat though kinda pricey for chicken.

Hold the salt!
Long lines, blaring noise levels...what's the fuss all about? This was some of the saltiest, greasiest fried chicken I've had in my life. As one other poster mentioned, it was better without the skin, but geez louise -- the skin should be the best part! Special side of mac and cheese was also inedibly salty. Doesn't anyone in this joint actually taste the food? Hold the salt, for cryin' out loud!Won't be back.

Splendid
What enjoyable experience. I hate a lot of things in this city... But I can't think of a single negative for this chicken shack. Food and atmosphere were spot on. I will definitely bring visitors here. Or come back for a date. And for all of you bitchin about the sugar on the skin- get over your damn selves. It's good.

amazing
Best fried chicken I have ever had. I sampled both with and without skin and they almost taste the same. If I lived near here I'd be fat. Love this place
