Disappointed
Hi, I recently ate here and I am a big fan of eating at various restaurants around the city so German food was not new. I was satisfied with the quality of the food, but unsatisfied with their service. I have never felt this unwelcome feeling in a restaurant- from the hostess to the server. I gave this restaurant another chance and I recommend the food but don't think I'd return due to the service. Next time I'll be getting delivery - the delivery person can't affect my meal as much.

A great german restaurant
I love this place. cold wonderful german beers, my personal favorite is their weiss beer with a lemon thrown in, perhaps the most delicious nectar i've found in manhattan. their staff are always decent and service is always good, which to me means fast and helpful and willing to explain, offer suggestions, answer questions without rolling their eyes at my utter stupidity/ignorance. the food is good hearty solid stuff that i always enjoy and my guests, who have ranged from my asian wife who was no fan of german food prior to this discovery, to my native german colleague, have both told me they enjoyed their meals there quite a bit.

Liederhosen rule!
Giant beers, giant portions, and a little German singing Oktoberfest drinking songs. What could be better

Still fun after all the years
I grew up on the UES near Yorktown. I had my first draft beer @ The Heidelberg. The place is cheesy as all get out but fun. The food is hearty and tasty. The service is excellent. I still go in when I'm in the neighborhood. It's fun.

Der Untergang (The Downfall)
Heidelberg used to be among the best hangouts in the city, let alone one of the best among Gotham's few German places. The beer selection is still good and the atmosphere is OK, but the food has gone downhill. And it's now too expensive given its poor quality. On a recent visit, I had the Saure Nieren, a dish I used to love at Heidelberg. The meat (beef kidneys) was severely overcooked. The Spaetzle was soggy and flavorless, and the red cabbage was straight out of a can. The only decent thing was the potato dumpling that came with my wife's gristly & fatty Sauerbraten. Even the Black Forest Cherry Cake tasted like the inside of a refrigerator. (The sausages are still good, but they surely come from Schaller & Weber, the fine German butcher shop next door). I have lived in Germany, I am an amateur German cook, and I have been eating and drinking in New York for a decade. Nine times out of ten, I go to a German bar or restaurant, so I am well informed in these matters. No matter the cuisine or cost, one should not resent what one paid at any restaurant, and it saddens me that Heidelberg gave me my first such disappointment in long time.

Still OK
This is a followup review. All's still OK. I've never had a problem with service and in fact, found it quite friendly and prompt. The schnitzel (one of us had chicken, one had veal--so what if authentic German style is pork -- when you go to a Chinese restaurant, do you really think you're getting native Chinese food?) Sausage was good, pickled herring and salad all OK. No great bargains here, but not outrageous either. Portions very ample. I saw the next table of post-college guys downing brews in boot shaped/ sized mugs. They seemed to enjoy the atmosphere as did we. If you go without expectations of a Michelin 3 star eatery, you'll do fine.

Great Experience!
I went here with my husband and parents and we had a great time! We ate like pigs, drank good beer and enjoyed the somewhat over the top atmosphere. The service could have been a bit better, but it wasn't awful. I highly recommend the weiner shnitzel and the pancakes with nutella!
