Fun and Good Food
A place that apparently hasn't changed in years and that's a good thing. Waitresses in peasant dresses and waiters in lederhosen - even our Latino waiter! Great food. The great potato salad was light without mayo and very light in vinegar. The red cabbage not so sour - the best I've had. A potato pancake of shredded potatoes was light, almost fluffy - deep fried to a crisp brown but without grease! The pot roast was flavorful and tender. The "beer garten" has no vegetation but it was delightful to be outside and in a quiet space in the middle of the city. It's at the back of the building next to the kitchen and a ventallation fan blows the cooking smells into this area -- good smells and not disturbing. We were there Saturday evening of a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend and it was maybe only half full or less. This was great for us but don't expect to be so lucky. I'm sure it is a bit more lively/noisy during busy times. Even those who arn't great fans of German food should be able to find something to their liking. I want to go back on my next visit to the City. It's easily accessable from the Lexington Avenue subway's 86th Street stop (both the local 6 and express 4 and 5 trains). Reservations only for parties of 6 or more.

The beer was good
We were told we didn't need a reservatiion for 2. When we arrived we were told the only seating was in the "beer garden". We said OK but after starting our meal discovered everyone around us was smoking. We asked to be moved and were moved after a delay. Our waiter then disappeared. He finally returned and offered a dessert menu. He was gone again and after 20 minutes we finally gave up and asked another waiter for the check. Our waiter returned and said he was sorry, he "forgot' about us.

German Fun!
I really enjoyed this little German Restaurant. The food is good and the beer was excellent. The service is ok....not the best, seems as if the servers have too many tables. So they are constantly back and forth. He was nice, just didn't seem him often. The atomosphere is excellent. I am German descent and family is from Munich and this very much reminded me of a small German place.... I could almost picture the Alps outside, untill the cabbie wailed his horn!

Food not as good as it once was
The food is good but unfortunately over time I have noticed that it is not as good as it once was. I enjoy the live music and entertainment which makes it worth my while to go back every once in a while.

Authentic atmosphere
Ate there just this past month. Good selection of beer, of course. Had the lunch special (generous portion) but was not knocked off my chair with the food's preparation. But, food not bad considering that the restaurant's main chef, who's cooked there for 28 years, is from Ecuador! Friendly staff.

This is the best restaurant/bar on the ues
This is the only restaurant/bar that I will order tap beer from. Excellent selection of beer, great food, Excellent bar atmosphere in a section of the upper east side that is full of characterless bars like Waterloo Tavern, Tin Lizzie, and Ship of Fools. This is a REAL establishment.

Not recommended
I don't think there is one thing I ordered that I liked. The food was just not good at all. After my dinner, I ordered chocolate fondu and the waiter said it would be 10- 20 minutes. It ended up taking 40 minutes. I would definately not recommend going here.
